Chaplain Receives Order of Holy Sepulchre

Chaplain (Maj.) Paul G. Passamonti, a US military chaplain stationed in Japan, and Chaplain (Maj.) James O’Neal, stationed in Korea, have received the Catholic “Order of the Holy Sepulchre,” bestowed upon less than 1,000 priests around the world.

The Order is the successor of a military force that was originally established in 1099 to protect the Tomb of Christ. It has since evolved to recognize members of the clergy and others who make significant professional or charitable contributions in service of furthering their faith and the ideals of the Catholic Church.

Like many chaplains, Passamonti was previously in the military as an enlisted Navy Sailor.  He has also served in Iraq.

“The recipients of this honor have contributed beyond the call of duty, and we are gratified for their service to God and to country,” [Bishop (Col.) Richard Spencer, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services] said at the ceremony. “We rejoice in their selection and we look forward to their continued service in our archdiocese.”
