First Chaplain to Receive Medal of Honor

A local paper has been documenting local heroes who have received the Medal of Honor.  They recently highlighted John Whitehead, a Chaplain in the 15th Indiana volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

Chaplain Whitehead received the Medal of Honor for his heroism in aiding wounded and dying soldiers in 1862.

Chaplains have been serving on the front lines of US armed conflicts for more than a century, sometimes dying alongside their fellow soldiers.

Chaplain Whitehead survived, and was reportedly the first US military chaplain to receive the Medal of Honor.
