Air Force Commentaries on Filling Squares, the Narrow Path

Writing on the Air Force homepage, SMSgt Vincent Miller penned “Filling Squares,” an article that many took as an apologist view of doing things just to get promoted:

As Airmen, we are more than familiar with the need to fill the proverbial squares as we strive to progress in our military career…Filling the squares also establishes separation from your peers and it is through this separation that you are most likely to fulfill your career aspirations and goals.

The article generated a slew of responses, some of which berated the Senior for appearing to promote ancillary activities over actual duty performance.  The comments likely took off because retired LtCol Tony Carr, recently a C-17 squadron commander, highlighted the commentary on his John Q. Congressmen, Advocates Call for Military Religious Freedom

Increasingly, each one of us in our different organizations and capacities have been getting confidential calls and other reports and information from members of the military pointing to this growing hostility toward religious freedom. Unfortunately, members of the military cannot speak out about these things.

Chaplains Speak on Experiences

A group of chaplains speak on their experiences and what the chaplaincy means to them:

  • The ability to share their faith with those who wouldn’t otherwise have heard it.
  • Counseling a Soldier who comes in and said “I’ve been bad.  Can I ever be good?“
  •  A soldier was comforted by knowing he’d be able to worship even in combat, though he was killed before he could do so.
  • Taking cadets to “service” — during the 7th inning of a baseball game.

Prayer Breakfasts and Spiritual Fitness

Prayer Breakfasts are important because they address the soldier’s deeper needs.  The Army believes fundamentally that the American soldier is more than just a body and that each soldier has unique needs. One of those specific needs – or pillars as we call them – is spiritual fitness.
