{"id":9163,"date":"2011-01-28T00:35:20","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T05:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=9163"},"modified":"2011-08-25T00:57:09","modified_gmt":"2011-08-25T05:57:09","slug":"atheist-soldier-highlights-need-for-spiritual-fitness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/28\/atheist-soldier-highlights-need-for-spiritual-fitness\/","title":{"rendered":"Atheist Soldier Highlights Need for Spiritual Fitness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/19\/fundamentalist-agnostic-wrote-armys-spiritual-fitness-test\/\">previously noted<\/a>, the US Army uses the now-controversial Global Assessment Tool to help Soldiers self-assess their emotional, social, family, and spiritual fitness.\u00a0 The spiritual fitness portion is intended to measure meaning, purpose, and connectedness.<\/p>\n<p>In his complaints, an atheist Soldier may have identified the very need for such efforts he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fayobserver.com\/articles\/2011\/01\/16\/1062025\">trying to dismiss<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not all of the spiritual questions are offensive,\u00a0he said. He didn&#8217;t mind being asked whether he has a purpose in life. But he balked at the idea of being <!--more-->closely tied to all of humanity and all of the world when part of a soldier&#8217;s job may be to kill another human.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Exactly!\u00a0 That &#8220;moral conflict&#8221; is something each Soldier needs to address.\u00a0 The US Army doesn&#8217;t <em>want<\/em> its hundreds of thousands of Soldiers disconnecting from humanity or de-humanizing their adversaries.\u00a0 Even in America&#8217;s short history, such attitudes have led to untold atrocities.\u00a0 This Soldier&#8217;s response?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[This question]\u00a0reeks of theological woo&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If I am closely connected to all humanity, then how do I reconcile the fact that is potentially my job to kill some of them? This is disturbing, illogical, and I want it to go away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;That question to me sounds like &#8216;Me and my closest six billion friends are hanging out playing Nintendo,'&#8221; [he] said with a laugh.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>This question is impossible to answer anything but 1 out of 5 in an intellectually honest way, no matter what your religious preference is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because its &#8220;disturbing&#8221; he wants it to &#8220;go away?&#8221;\u00a0 <em>War<\/em> is &#8220;disturbing&#8221; and we may all wish it would &#8220;go away,&#8221;\u00a0but that doesn&#8217;t change the need for Soldiers to understand their moral place in\u00a0war.<\/p>\n<p>Is it a moral dichotomy to kill another human being while feeling connected to humanity and valuing human life?\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 That disconnect &#8212; that <em>spiritual<\/em> conflict &#8212; is what makes us human, and restrains us from unnecessary violence and wanton destruction.\u00a0 The Army doesn&#8217;t want its Soldiers&#8217; understandings of humanity to &#8220;go away&#8221;\u00a0&#8212; they want them to be understood.<\/p>\n<p>The atheist Soldier intended to mockingly highlight the &#8220;contradiction&#8221; of the Army&#8217;s questionnaire in order to dismiss it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he has highlighted the very useful and effective reason for which it is intended.<\/p>\n<p>Nicely done.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As previously noted, the US Army uses the now-controversial Global Assessment Tool to help Soldiers self-assess their emotional, social, family, and spiritual fitness.\u00a0 The spiritual fitness portion is intended to measure meaning, purpose, and connectedness.
