{"id":9098,"date":"2011-01-21T00:30:06","date_gmt":"2011-01-21T05:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=9098"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:35","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:35","slug":"weinstein-attacks-usafa-speaker-wrong-kind-of-christian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/21\/weinstein-attacks-usafa-speaker-wrong-kind-of-christian\/","title":{"rendered":"Weinstein Attacks USAFA Speaker: He&#8217;s &#8216;Wrong Kind of Christian&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein has written\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffmcclary.pdf\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0to the USAFA Superintendent, LtGen Michael Gould, &#8220;demanding&#8221; that an invitation to Lt Clebe McClary (USMC, Ret.) be rescinded.\u00a0 Lt McClary &#8212; an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clebemcclary.com\/index.htm\">internationally recognized motivational speaker<\/a> and wounded\u00a0Vietnam Veteran &#8212;\u00a0has apparently been invited to speak at the\u00a010 February National Prayer Luncheon for the 10th Air Base Wing, the wing that runs the facilities surrounding the Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Weinstein&#8217;s reason?\u00a0 McClary is the &#8216;wrong kind of Christian:&#8217;\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Statements&#8230;from former Lt. McClary blatantly exclude not only non-Christians, but also the many Christians who do not subscribe to [his] <em>particularly fundamentalist view of Christianity<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It truly is an outrage&#8230;that [USAFA] has afforded an elite and coveted proselytizing forum to <em>such a fundamentalist Christian<\/em>&#8230; (emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even the local <em>Colorado Springs Gazette<\/em> noted Weinstein&#8217;s issue was that the speaker was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/articles\/group-111500-force-afa.html\">too evangelical<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; highlighting Weinstein&#8217;s primary focus\u00a0on the <em>content<\/em> of the\u00a0<em>religious beliefs<\/em> (or Christian denomination) of the speaker.\u00a0 Weinstein apparently would have the Air Force Academy institute an official religious test of each of its potential speakers, evaluating their theology prior to offering an invitation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MRFF hereby formally demands the United States Air Force Academy immediately rescind its invitation to former Lt. McClary and choose a new speaker who can appropriately embody a message of inclusiveness for all Academy attendees.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The uproar is marginally understandable when you read one of the misunderstood <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talk2action.org\/story\/2011\/1\/20\/115843\/940\">concepts behind the complaint<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While military chaplains are expected to provide non-denominational options to those in uniform, critics charge that prayer breakfasts sometimes favor conservative and evangelical brands of Christianity&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That statement is patently false.\u00a0 There is no expectation that Chaplains &#8220;provide non-denominational options to those in uniform.&#8221;\u00a0 Nothing says a meeting led by a Jewish Chaplain has to be non-Jewish, nor one by an Islamic Chaplain be\u00a0non-Islamic.\u00a0 In fact, the opposite is true.<\/p>\n<p><em>It is entirely permissible for a person who holds a specific religious belief to stand up in front of uniformed servicemembers and deliver a speech <\/em>(despite prior examples of <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/01\/chaplains-disinvite-frcs-perkins-over-dadt-statements\/\">Tony Perkins<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/23\/franklin-graham-and-military-religious-freedom-continued\/\">Franklin Graham<\/a> to the contrary)<em>.\u00a0 <\/em>Weinstein&#8217;s complaint is frivolous, and is yet another example of manufacturing offense at Christian beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, if one can get past the repetitive and unnecessary florid language in Weinstein&#8217;s letter, it appears Weinstein intentionally disrespects the wounded combat veteran.\u00a0 Weinstein refers to him repeatedly as &#8220;former Lt.&#8221;\u00a0 The proper form of address for McClary is simply &#8220;Lieutenant;&#8221; McClary is a retired military officer &#8212; not a separated former officer, as Weinstein\u00a0is himself.<\/p>\n<p>The ironic hypocrisy is likely missed by most who have read the letter.\u00a0 Weinstein, a supposed defender of religious freedom, demands an invitation be rescinded <em>because of the religious beliefs<\/em> of the speaker.\u00a0 He evaluates the acceptability of those beliefs, calling them insufficiently &#8220;inclusive,&#8221; and demands the military institute a similar\u00a0religious test.\u00a0 The fact that Weinstein&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/21\/weinstein-gets-cool-reception-at-acsc-maxwell-afb\/\">own speech is wantonly &#8220;non-inclusive,&#8221;<\/a> or that USAFA has invited those with <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/08\/usafa-should-rescind-atheists-religious-respect-training-invite\/\">similar &#8220;offensive&#8221; agendas to <em>help develop curriculum<\/em><\/a> is apparently missed.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Gazette<\/em>, which properly addresses McClary, also says Weinstein is calling for the removal of Gould as Superintendent (Weinstein previously <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/20\/bat-signal-busted-weinstein-declares-war-back-on\/\">praised the Supe<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Weinstein] says the academy\u2019s choice of retired Marine 1st Lt. Clebe McClary shows that superintendent Lt. Gen.
