In a recent address at the National Defense University<\/a>, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said this in response to a question about whether the “tolerance…has changed regarding ethics<\/a>” in the military:<\/p>\n

We have to have a true compass ethically. We have to have a true compass morally. We have to have a true compass inside our profession.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He’s right, of course.\u00a0 No one has ever debated the need for a moral standard by which military members must live and serve.\u00a0 The question, however, has been what defines the truth<\/em> of that\u00a0“true compass.”\u00a0 “True” implies the presence of “right,” or “correct” — even “wrong” or “false.”\u00a0 So what is the standard upon which Mullen’s compass is based?\u00a0 Unfortunately, he doesn’t say.<\/p>\n

Even the ADF’s Alan Sears recently wrote that the military hands its troops a ‘compass’ — but one without a ‘true North.’<\/a><\/p>\n

With the repeal of DADT, we are handing the men charged with protecting our borders and defending our freedoms a moral compass with no \u201cmagnetic north.\u201d We are telling them to \u201cbe good\u201d in the ways we want them to be, and to ignore \u201cbad\u201d as it suits our politically-correct purposes.<\/p>\n

And that is not because we as a nation are no longer sure of what is \u201cmoral\u201d and right, but because we do know \u2013 and are agreeing to ignore the truth that is in us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
