As a result of the videos he produced while XO<\/a>, the Navy has relieved CAPT Owen “Opie” Honors<\/a> of his command of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise<\/em>.\u00a0 Said ADM John Harvey<\/a>:<\/p>\n

While Capt. Honors’ performance as commanding officer of USS Enterprise<\/em> has been without incident, his profound lack of good judgment and professionalism while previously serving as executive officer on Enterprise calls into question his character and completely undermines his credibility to continue to serve effectively in command.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Admiral did not explain how the videos from 2007\u00a0would<\/em> undermine Honors’ command of the Enterprise<\/em> in 2011, but did not<\/em> undermine his command of the USS Mount Whitney<\/em><\/a> in the intervening years<\/a>, as when he delivered aid to Georgia after its war with Russia.\u00a0 (Some groups are claiming earlier ‘inaction’ on the Navy’s part may be a negative indicator of the institution’s culture<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

The Navy Times <\/em>published more videos here<\/a>, some of which are literally the standard fare public service announcements.\u00a0 Some of Honors’ videos were distasteful and unprofessional, and, as the Navy said<\/a>,<\/p>\n

It is fact that as naval officers we are held to a higher standard…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Notably, however, there have been no indications, at least publicly, that Honors’ command culture was anything but respectful and professional.\u00a0 It is possible that his command climate mirrored his videos, but\u00a0unlike some other Navy officers<\/a>, there has yet to be any mainstream\u00a0public\u00a0criticism of his actual leadership<\/em>.\u00a0 In fact, the opposite has been true<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though readers here are likely not surprised, others may be shocked to learn profanity<\/a>, sexual innuendo<\/a>, and frat house style<\/a> humor are actually rather common in the military culture.<\/p>\n
