A recent article on AF.mil<\/a> noted the Operation Deep Freeze<\/em> runs by USAF C-17s flying from New Zealand to McMurdo Air Station, Antarctica.\u00a0 Most interesting, however, was the included photograph:<\/p>\n

It seems benign at first, but if you look at the pallets between the passengers, you can see cases of beer…lots<\/em> of cases of beer:\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Granted, there aren’t any Wal-Marts or Package Stores in Antarctica, so the residents of the remote outposts can’t just hop in the car and go pick up a case of Spring Tide “lower carb lager” or Corona.\u00a0 Everything (literally, everything<\/a>) has to be flown or shipped in.\u00a0 In addition, the station and surrounding support are manned by around a thousand civilians (in the summer).<\/p>\n

Truthfully, there may even be larger “beer runs” in other cases, given how much support material\u00a0the US military moves around the world for its widely deployed troops.<\/p>\n

Still, its intriguing to watch the military devote such a large load of a C-17 to deliver alcoholic beverages even as it highlights “the dangers of holiday drinking<\/a>.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
