{"id":8600,"date":"2010-12-20T02:33:01","date_gmt":"2010-12-20T07:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=8600"},"modified":"2010-12-20T02:33:01","modified_gmt":"2010-12-20T07:33:01","slug":"rabbi-sues-army-over-beard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/rabbi-sues-army-over-beard\/","title":{"rendered":"Rabbi Sues Army over Beard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/27\/conflict-between-belief-regs-prevents-jewish-chaplain\/\">noted earlier this year<\/a>, Rabbi Menachem Stern has been trying for some time to become a US military Chaplain, but has faced resistance over his orthodox appearance.\u00a0 He has apparently been unable to obtain a waiver for his beard.<\/p>\n<p>He is now reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/crime-scene\/spencer-s-hsu\/rabbi-sues-army-over-beard-rul.html\">suing the Army for &#8220;denying him a commission&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0because of\u00a0his religious tenets.\u00a0 His lawsuit specifically cites the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/01\/article-military-quietly-opens-to-sikhs\/\">waivers given to Sikhs<\/a> &#8212; men who were not Chaplains &#8212; and a bearded Muslim intern <!--more-->at Walter Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Some have said it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onenewsnow.com\/Security\/Default.aspx?id=1251902\">demonstrates a double-standard<\/a>, as the military is permitting some, but not all, religious adherents to enter the service with waivers to their appearance.\u00a0 In the very least, it demonstrates the complexity of issuing but a single waiver &#8212; it immediately becomes fodder for claims for more.<\/p>\n<p>Stern is by no means the only Jewish person to have or want a beard in the military.\u00a0 Chaplain (Col) Jacob Goldstein (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/18\/jewish-chaplain-candidate-awaits-waiver-for-beard\/\">photo here<\/a>) has worn a beard for years in the Army.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Also noted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/religionclause.blogspot.com\/2010\/12\/rabbi-rejected-as-army-chaplain-because.html\">Religion Clause<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/armychaplaincy.com\/2010\/12\/08\/rabbi-sues-army-over-beard-ruling\/\">Army Chaplaincy blog<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As noted earlier this year, Rabbi Menachem Stern has been trying for some time to become a US military Chaplain, but has faced resistance over his orthodox appearance.\u00a0 He has apparently been unable to obtain a waiver for his beard.
