According to news reports<\/a>, former Army Lt Dan Choi (once again<\/a>) chained himself to the White House perimeter fence, resulting in arrest by the park police.\u00a0 Rather than walking away in cuffs, he apparently chose to “go limp.”\u00a0 Last time Choi did the same thing<\/a> he was actually still an officer in the Army.<\/p>\n

Choi was discharged last summer under DADT, and he recently tried to re-enlist during the 8-day injunction of the law banning homosexuals from serving in the military.<\/p>\n

The next time Choi tries to sign up with the military, it should show him the door, regardless of the status of DADT.\u00a0 He apparently lacks the strength of character to be a military officer:\u00a0 While he was a still serving in the military, he showed blatant disregard for the regulations regarding uniform wear and political protest, though the Army didn’t publicly reprimand him at the time. (Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt was ultimately court-martialed<\/a> for a similar offense.)\u00a0 Now, as a civilian, Choi improperly presented himself in a military uniform and repeated the criminal act (though charges were dropped<\/a> after the last arrest).<\/p>\n

This isn’t a complicated concept.\u00a0 (See the clear language of DoDD 1334.01<\/a>, paragraphs 3.1 and 3.2.)\u00a0 Military members cannot wear uniforms as part of a political protest.\u00a0 Former military member can wear uniforms under\u00a0some circumstances, but political protest isn’t one of them.\u00a0 As an officer, he should have been\u00a0acutely aware of the conduct unbecoming he was demonstrating in public, regardless of his political position.<\/p>\n

The military regulations he violated are the same regardless of sexual preference, and they won’t change with a change in DADT.\u00a0 If he can’t demonstrate an ability to obey them now, he shouldn’t be permitted to serve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
