{"id":7974,"date":"2010-11-09T00:30:16","date_gmt":"2010-11-09T05:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=7974"},"modified":"2010-11-08T00:51:33","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T05:51:33","slug":"air-force-officer-loses-leg-re-enters-pilot-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/09\/air-force-officer-loses-leg-re-enters-pilot-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force Officer Loses Leg, Re-enters Pilot Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123228804\">Air Force News release<\/a>, 1Lt Ryan McGuire has been granted a medical waiver to return to pilot training with a prostethic leg below the knee.<\/p>\n<p>McGuire was reportedly injured in a boating accident during pilot training; since having his lower leg amputated, he has\u00a0run the Air Force Marathon.\u00a0 He was found medically fit for duty just this past August, and at the end of October his medical waiver for pilot training was approved.<\/p>\n<p>The article indicates that other active pilots have used prosthetics, including <!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123141717\">C-130 pilot Maj Alan Brown<\/a> and former <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/news\/newsarticle.aspx?id=24627\">Air Force Two pilot LtCol Andrew Lourake<\/a> &#8212; who was reportedly the first active pilot to return to flight status after amputation.\u00a0 There are no stories of fighter pilot amputees immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>McGuire appears to be the first student to return to trainee status to gain his wings.\u00a0 It is not unusual for medical waiver to contain restrictions.\u00a0 At this point, it is unclear which aircraft McGuire will fly in training, or if he will be restricted to certain airframes\u00a0after graduation.\u00a0 If his waiver is blanket, he could conceivably go on to fly any advanced fighter or ejection seat equipped aircraft.\u00a0 If his story to date is an indicator of his resolve, he may well go far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to an Air Force News release, 1Lt Ryan McGuire has been granted a medical waiver to return to pilot training with a prostethic leg below the knee.
