{"id":7873,"date":"2010-11-01T00:35:18","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T06:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=7873"},"modified":"2013-10-04T21:06:09","modified_gmt":"2013-10-05T00:06:09","slug":"survey-military-majority-backs-dadt-repeal-chaplains-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/01\/survey-military-majority-backs-dadt-repeal-chaplains-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Military Majority Backs DADT Repeal, Chaplains Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite General Conway&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/18\/general-95-of-marines-oppose-dadt-repeal\/\">prior anecdotal evidence<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/10\/28\/AR2010102807739.html\">several news outlets<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2010\/10\/ap-military-survey-says-majority-back-ending-gay-ban-102810\/\">reported on &#8220;leaked&#8221; details<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/article\/20101030\/yet-released-survey-soldiers-ok-with-open-military\/\">the Department of Defense&#8217;s study<\/a> on the repeal of the policy known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell.&#8221;\u00a0 Reportedly, &#8220;a majority&#8230;would not object&#8221; to the service of open homosexuals.<\/p>\n<p>The reports also indicated &#8220;some&#8230;but not a majority &#8212; objected strongly&#8221; and &#8220;said they would quit the military if the policy changed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Notably, whether or not personnel &#8220;objected&#8221; was not supposed to be the intent of the DoD study.\u00a0 Secretary of Defense Robert Gates repeatedly said the study was to determine how best to <em>implement<\/em> repeal, not determine <em>whether<\/em> to repeal.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/22\/number-of-chaplains-opposing-dadt-repeal-increases\/\">previously reported response of retired Chaplains<\/a> was <!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/10\/29\/AR2010102904334.html\">revisited in the press<\/a>, also at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onenewsnow.com\/Politics\/Default.aspx?id=1219936\">several different sites<\/a>.\u00a0 A spokesperson for the Defense Department gave the first &#8220;official&#8221; response to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2010\/10\/ap-retired-chaplains-warn-against-dont-ask-repeal-102910\/\">impact of DADT repeal on Chaplains<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Department of Defense has not said specifically how it would address any potential conflicts with chaplains stemming from the end of &#8220;don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell,&#8221; but Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez said the military would not force chaplains to keep their beliefs silent. &#8220;Chaplains are allowed to speak according to the dictates of their faith,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With great acumen, chaplains, throughout the Department&#8217;s history, have found means wherein they could strike a balance between faith group requirements and Department of Defense needs,&#8221; Lainez said. &#8220;Members who feel something is inappropriate may always utilize their chain of command, the inspector general or other systems already in place, to address their concerns.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this level, then, the military is saying &#8220;Chaplains are allowed to speak according to the dictates of their faith,&#8221; even if those dictates include opposition to homosexuality.<\/p>\n<p>The next question is obvious:\u00a0 What about the <em>non<\/em>-Chaplain members of the military who have those same dictates of faith?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite General Conway&#8217;s prior anecdotal evidence, several news outlets have reported on &#8220;leaked&#8221; details of the Department of Defense&#8217;s study on the repeal of the policy known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell.&#8221;\u00a0 Reportedly, &#8220;a majority&#8230;would not object&#8221; to the service of open homosexuals.
