{"id":7704,"date":"2010-10-20T00:45:26","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T06:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=7704"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:39","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:39","slug":"michael-weinstein-opposes-bible-supports-koran-in-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/20\/michael-weinstein-opposes-bible-supports-koran-in-military\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Weinstein Opposes Bible, Supports Koran in Military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein has repeatedly demonstrated an animosity toward the association of the US military with the Christian Bible.\u00a0 In 2009, his Military Religious Freedom Foundation opposed a Chaplain <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/10\/chaplain-ministers-to-all-even-other-nations\/\">bringing\u00a0Swahili Bibles to Iraq<\/a>, despite the fact they were <em>requested<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/10\/chaplain-ministers-to-all-even-other-nations\/\">third country nationals<\/a> supporting the US military effort.\u00a0 The &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; organization <em>opposed<\/em> support for the <em>religious freedom<\/em> of US\u00a0allies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Weinstein highly publicized a cropped photograph of a US Army trainee posing with his M-16 and his Bible &#8212; alongside a similarly photographed Hamas suicide bomber.\u00a0 (The photos can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/share.htm#phot\">seen here<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/article\/military-evangelism-deeper-wider-than-first-thought\">original\u00a0article<\/a> was written by Jason Leopold, currently an editor for TruthOut, for which Weinstein is a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/27\/weinstein-fights-christians-in-military\/\">board member and fundraiser<\/a>.)\u00a0 Weinstein&#8217;s MRFF is quoted saying &#8220;fundamentalist Christianity&#8221; in the US military &#8220;is starting to mirror Islamic fundamentalism.&#8221;\u00a0 (Tellingly, he never made similar statements about photos of Jewish Soldiers and their weapons, some of which can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/photogallery\/photogalleryindex.htm\">seen here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Weinstein&#8217;s most recent complaint is <!--more-->apparently in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/opinion\/christians-105775-museum-state.html\">hallway of quotes at the Air Force Academy<\/a>.\u00a0 One of the quotes in the hallway is allegedly from the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>In an odd contrast, Weinstein seems to be <em>supportive<\/em> of associations of the <em>Koran<\/em> with military service.\u00a0 Though he was <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/10\/koran-burning-copy-cats-hypocrisy-and-replacement-texts\/\">upstaged by CAIR<\/a> in the press, Weinstein promised to send one Koran to the Afghan National Army &#8212; notably, <em>not<\/em> Afghan <em>civilians<\/em> &#8212; for every one Florida Pastor Terry Jones burned.\u00a0 In addition, he publicly stated his intent to have the US military deliver the religious texts to Afghanistan.\u00a0 Apparently, he and his organization oppose an\u00a0American military Chaplain\u00a0providing asked-for\u00a0Bibles,\u00a0but support official military distribution of Korans\u00a0even when they&#8217;re not requested.\u00a0 His hypocrisy wasn&#8217;t well received even by his own supporters, some of whom recanted their prior financial support of his organization as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the Department of Defense recently published an article on the swearing-in of Afghan National Army recruits.\u00a0 In the accompanying photos, the US-backed military recruits take their oath to support &#8220;God and Country&#8221; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/58226\/ana-recruits-commit-loyalty-god-country-and-duty\">Korans laying next to their US-supplied weapons<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/afgkorsm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Official Caption:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Recruits take the oath of enlistment during an Afghan National Army ceremony in Regional Military Training Center \u2013 Kandahar. (<em>Photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Ernesto Hernandez Fonte<\/em>)\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weinstein&#8217;s Koran stunt was little more than an opportunistic ploy for publicity, a late-game effort to coat-tail on the international attention Jones was receiving.\u00a0 (The Jones brouhaha had nothing to do with religious freedom in the US military.)\u00a0 That he was willing to take such a step, though, again demonstrates the intellectual inconsistency of his actions with his stated position.<\/p>\n<p>In this instance, Weinstein&#8217;s prior condemnation of\u00a0<em>Christian<\/em> activities in the US military contradicts his public plans to\u00a0support <em>non-Christian<\/em> ones.\u00a0 Despite his claim of defending the Constitution, his <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/11\/weinstein-calls-on-military-to-ban-christian-group\/\">true agenda<\/a> could not be more clear &#8212; and it has nothing to do with &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; in the US military.<\/p>\n<p>If Jones had followed through on this plans to burn the Korans, the Afghan military recruits could have been swearing their allegiance on Korans supplied by Weinstein&#8217;s MRFF, in a display of religious association Weinstein would supposedly\u00a0oppose.\u00a0 Would he have\u00a0claimed they, like US Christians, were a mirror of Hamas?<\/p>\n<p>Given that <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/27\/freedom-group-takes-threatening-stance-against-troops\/\">its <em>Christianity<\/em> with which Weinstein is &#8220;at war,&#8221;<\/a> it doesn&#8217;t seem likely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein has repeatedly demonstrated an animosity toward the association of the US military with the Christian Bible.\u00a0 In 2009, his Military Religious Freedom Foundation opposed a Chaplain bringing\u00a0Swahili Bibles to Iraq, despite the fact they were requested by third country nationals supporting the US military effort.\u00a0 The &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; organization opposed support for the religious freedom of US\u00a0allies.
