{"id":7465,"date":"2010-10-07T00:25:44","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T06:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=7465"},"modified":"2010-10-04T00:14:11","modified_gmt":"2010-10-04T06:14:11","slug":"military-pilots-sleeping-in-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/07\/military-pilots-sleeping-in-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Pilots Sleeping in Flight?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article at MSNBC talks about the controversy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/39214869\/ns\/us_news\/\">pilots sleeping while in flight<\/a>.\u00a0 The discussion about airline pilots is a separate issue; the article specifically mentions <em>military<\/em> pilots, however:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even a 10-minute nap can improve a pilot&#8217;s performance, said Scott Shappell, a Clemson University professor who as director of the Human Factors Institute helped write the flying policies that govern military pilots.<\/p>\n<p>In the military, pilots flying alone have been allowed for decades to take naps, Shappell said. &#8220;I can tell you absolutely, but good luck trying to find proof of this, in the military we have single-seat pilots take naps,&#8221; he said. <!--more-->They&#8217;re called ORPs \u2013 officer rest periods \u2013 and last from 10 to 20 minutes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shappell doesn&#8217;t cite his source (he is cited as an expert) and downplays the ability to support his assertion.\u00a0 There is probably good reason there&#8217;s no &#8220;proof&#8221; of his claim that single seat pilots sleep at their controls.\u00a0 If they did, those pilots are probably grounded or dead.\u00a0 As an example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/shared\/media\/epubs\/AFI11-202V3.pdf \">AFI 11-202v3<\/a>, the Air Force Instruction governing flight operations, says this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>9.9.6. Controlled Cockpit Rest.
