{"id":7337,"date":"2010-09-22T00:40:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T06:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=7337"},"modified":"2010-09-21T23:21:11","modified_gmt":"2010-09-22T05:21:11","slug":"incoming-marine-commandant-opposes-dadt-repeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/22\/incoming-marine-commandant-opposes-dadt-repeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoming Marine Commandant Opposes DADT Repeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite some <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/17\/general-amos-chosen-for-views-on-dadt\/\">prior insinuations to the contrary<\/a>, it appears Marine General James Amos holds much the same view as General James Conway, outgoing Marine Commandant, when it comes to the policy known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In testimony at his confirmation hearing at the Senate Armed Services Committee, Amos reportedly said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.com\/news\/article\/amos-says-dadt-repeal-a-distraction.html\">DADT repeal is a &#8220;distraction&#8221;<\/a> to the ongoing wars, and he personally opposes the repeal.\u00a0 In his written answers to advance questions, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/POLITICS\/09\/21\/military.gays.amos\/index.html\">reportedly said<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In my personal view the current law and associated policy have supported the unique requirements of the Marine Corps and thus I do not recommend its repeal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During his testimony he also gave a hint to <!--more-->the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2010\/09\/ap-amos-commandant-confirmation-hearing-092110\/\">outcome of internal surveys<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Under questioning by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., [Amos] acknowledged that internal surveys revealed a predominantly negative view of a repeal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator McCain also criticized the DoD response as a whole, noting the DoD Working Group is studying <em>how<\/em>, not <em>whether<\/em>, to repeal DADT, something McCain called &#8220;an incredible act of disingenuous behavior on [Secretary Gates&#8217; and others&#8217;] part.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, while Amos repeated the standard line that the military would obey the orders imposed on it by its civilian leadership, he amplified that by speculating on treatment of those who <em>opposed<\/em> DADT within the military:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During one exchange with Sen. Pete Sessions, R-Ala., Amos said he would &#8220;stand to&#8221; and implement any changes in the law on gay service made by Congress. He said the Marine Corps would rely on discipline and leadership to ensure order, but that <em>he didn&#8217;t envision a gag order on troops who disagreed with revoking the ban<\/em>.
