in US Military Cause Protest, Sort of"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you can get past the title, Dr. James White&#8217;s article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crosswalk.com\/pastors\/11636822\/page0\/\">Strippers Going to War<\/a>&#8221; has an interesting perspective on religion in the military.\u00a0 Dr. White is Professor of Theology and Culture at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gordonconwell.edu\/\">Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>White&#8217;s topic is the Christian reaction &#8212; or over-reaction &#8212; to perceptions of sin or evil in the culture.\u00a0 In one example, he cites the case of Pastor Donald Crosby of the Kingdom Builders Church of Jesus Christ in Warner Robins, Georgia.\u00a0 (The story was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/2010-07-31-demon-mascot_N.htm\">originally covered by\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>\u00a0via WMAZ in\u00a0Macon, Ga.)\u00a0 The pastor enrolled his son in the local high school, only to discover their mascot was&#8230;a <em>demon<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He&#8217;s been collecting signatures of protest ever since, saying that a pitchfork-wielding mascot sends the wrong message to teens.\u00a0 &#8220;Hundreds of children gather into one place at one time chanting \u2018Go Demons.&#8217;\u00a0 It&#8217;s the equivalent of us gathering into a church on Sunday morning and shouting \u2018Go, Jesus&#8217; or \u2018Hallelujah Jesus,&#8217; the pastor maintains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interesting thing is, that&#8217;s not at all the history behind the mascot:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>School principal Steve Monday says that the origin of the mascot isn&#8217;t religious at all.\u00a0 In fact, it started in World War II from the 7th fighter squadron at Robbins [<em>sic<\/em>] Air Force Base, <!--more-->which earned its nickname in the South Pacific who were known as the &#8220;Screamin&#8217; Demons.&#8217;\u00a0 The school adopted the name in a show of patriotic honor to the squadron.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>White takes the stand that the pastor&#8217;s reaction isn&#8217;t right; in fact, it&#8217;s &#8220;just dumb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even more interesting, however, is the fact that the supernatural &#8220;Demons&#8221; live on.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afhra.af.mil\/factsheets\/factsheet.asp?id=9762\">7th Fighter Squadron<\/a> Screamin&#8217; Demons now fly out of Holloman AFB, New Mexico, in the US Air Force&#8217;s premier fighter, the F-22A <em>Raptor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Given the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/16\/weinstein-threatens-another-suit-over-military-symbols\/\">recent complaint over &#8220;Christian&#8221; symbology<\/a> on a military patch, think anyone will complain about the &#8220;spiritual&#8221; connotation of the name or the patch for the 7th FS?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/AFG-091207-011sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seems unlikely.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll probably happen at the same time they complain about the similarities to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atheists.org\/about\/AA_Logo\">atheist symbol<\/a> on another patch:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/586patchsm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For what its worth, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/03\/demons-live-on-at-military-academy\/\">Demons live on at the Air Force Academy<\/a>, too.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123220685\">USAFA Falcons even defeated some demons<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n<p>In a reportedly majority Christian country, and in a military that conspiracy theorists say has already been taken over by religious fundamentalists, why hasn&#8217;t any Christian publicly complained or threatened to file lawsuits over <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/29\/weinstein-reveals-vendetta-in-demanding-removal-of-cross\/\">symbology such as these<\/a>?\u00a0 After all, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/30\/us-army-unmoved-by-weinstein-threat\/\">Weinstein has done the same thing<\/a> over a red cross on a hospital&#8217;s emblem.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s entirely possible that Christians <em>have<\/em> brought up the issue in the past, though it seems evident their complaints didn&#8217;t go anywhere.\u00a0 Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Simple.\u00a0 Dr. White is right.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just dumb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you can get past the title, Dr. James White&#8217;s article &#8220;Strippers Going to War&#8221;
