{"id":6920,"date":"2010-08-26T00:45:20","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T06:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=6920"},"modified":"2010-08-22T22:03:26","modified_gmt":"2010-08-23T04:03:26","slug":"soldier-airman-charged-with-marital-infidelity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/26\/soldier-airman-charged-with-marital-infidelity\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldier, Airman Charged with Marital Infidelity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While there seems to remain a percentage of the American population that believes the military cannot enforce rules on moral conduct, continuing cases demonstrate that is not the case.<\/p>\n<p>In the Army, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/sergeant-major-charged-with-raping-junior-soldier-1.98639\">Sergeant Major was recently charged<\/a> with raping a lower ranking Soldier.\u00a0 Additional charges included abuse of rank, disobeying Army regulations, and adultery.<\/p>\n<p>In the Air Force, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2010\/08\/airforce_gurney_webbie_080510\/\">Chief Master Sergeant is facing court martial<\/a> over charges of misuse of government position, failure to obey orders, indecent conduct, and adultery, among other charges.<\/p>\n<p><em>Adultery<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Within the United States, the military remains one of the few places, if not the only, where one can still be charged with the <em>crime<\/em> of being unfaithful to one&#8217;s spouse.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From an amoral standpoint, the adultery charge would seemingly be irrelevant, particularly since the other charges seem far more serious.\u00a0 One explanation might be the military&#8217;s emphasis on the importance of character, as well as family.\u00a0 Both are violently damaged by such misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>To call it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>mis<\/em><\/span>conduct is virtually a misnomer in society today, however, as adultery is more the purview of gossip magazines than any form of moral standard.\u00a0 That said, even the non-sectarian society views infidelity with some disdain.\u00a0 Anyone believing the American culture has progressed far beyond old-fashioned notions of fidelity needs only look at the public&#8217;s treatment of high profile cases, say, Kobe Bryant or Tiger Woods.\u00a0 Rather than defend their actions as &#8220;how they were born,&#8221; wired, or otherwise naturally inclined, the vast majority of cultural reaction was one of disdain &#8212; not defense or even apathy &#8212; for the men in those relationships.<\/p>\n<p>There have previously been calls for the military to remove its &#8220;fuddy duddy&#8221; notions of marital faithfulness (see Kelly Flynn).\u00a0 Such discussions may be reignited by the potential repeal of &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell,&#8221; as the military struggles with\u00a0how to deal with &#8220;marriage&#8221; as recognized by the federal government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While there seems to remain a percentage of the American population that believes the military cannot enforce rules on moral conduct, continuing cases demonstrate that is not the case.
