Edward Rosa reads the Bible and extends a cigarette to Pfc. Jorge Rostra Obando, who was stunned by an explosion in Afghanistan\u2019s Arghanab Valley. One comrade was killed and two injured in the blast. Pfc. Rostran asked the sergeant to read Psalm 91, a favorite from his childhood. (Ricardo Garcia Vilanova for The Wall Street Journal)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 503px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/photojournal\/2010\/06\/09\/you-will-not-fear\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/wsjsm.jpg\" alt=\"Wall Street Journal photo\" width=\"493\" height=\"660\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wall Street Journal photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the comments on the WSJ site, a poster who said he was Obando&#8217;s father chimed in with pride for his son&#8217;s faith; someone who said they were a Gideon even pointed out the fact it was a freely distributed (and well worn) Gideon Bible the two Soldiers were sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0some organizations have demanded that the military &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/rules-set-for-religious-access-at-meps-sites-1.86702\">close their doors<\/a>&#8221; to the Gideons, and the publication of the photo\u00a0brought out similar detractors:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>3:30 pm June 10, 2010<br \/>\nU.S. Atheist service member wrote:<br \/>\nChristian propaganda. We wouldn\u2019t be in this mess if it were not for religion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>1:03 pm June 9, 2010<br \/>\nJim Douglas wrote:<br \/>\nKeep on fighting the Christian Jihad, oh brave soldiers of Christ! Crush the Muslim empire and bring them the One True Religion!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the incendiary comments (one wonders if they&#8217;ve bothered to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+91&amp;version=NIV\">Psalm 91<\/a>), religious freedom remains protected within the US military, even (and perhaps especially) among men in combat.\u00a0\u00a0The military generally protects the right of its members to integrate their\u00a0faith and with their daily professional lives.\u00a0 It also recognizes the value of Soldiers&#8217; faith to their mission effectiveness and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Though some conspiracy theorists would likely claim this photo could be &#8220;propaganda&#8221; to extremist enemies, the actions of Rosa and Obando are\u00a0not only permitted, they are encouraged.\u00a0 It is telling, however, that some would protest the simple act of Soldiers encouraging each other with a Bible verse from a well-worn Testament.<\/p>\n<p>Now, about that cigarette&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lamar-vest\/faith-on-the-front-lines_b_609086.html\">Lamar Vest<\/a>, President and CEO of\u00a0The American Bible Society, who posted an article on the Huffington Post, a liberal-leaning site that generated similar comments to the detractors above.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A frontpage photo on the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago highlighted the presence of faith even in the struggle of war.\u00a0 From the caption: RESCUE AND PROTECT: Staff Sgt.
