{"id":5105,"date":"2010-05-04T00:27:43","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T08:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=5105"},"modified":"2010-05-03T20:33:07","modified_gmt":"2010-05-04T04:33:07","slug":"president-proclaims-national-day-of-prayer-6-may-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/04\/president-proclaims-national-day-of-prayer-6-may-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"President Proclaims National Day of Prayer, 6 May 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama issued the annual proclamation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/presidential-proclamation-national-day-prayer-0\">marking\u00a0the National Day of Prayer<\/a>, which will be 6 May this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are blessed to live in a Nation that counts freedom of conscience and free exercise of religion among its most fundamental principles, thereby ensuring that all people of goodwill may hold and practice their beliefs according to the dictates of their consciences.\u00a0 Prayer has been a sustaining way for many Americans of diverse faiths to express their most cherished beliefs, and thus we have long deemed it fitting and proper to publicly recognize the importance of prayer on this day across the Nation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Let us pray for the safety and success of those who have left home to serve in our Armed Forces, putting their lives at risk in order to make the world a safer place.\u00a0 As we remember them, let us not forget their families and the substantial sacrifices that they make every day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is interesting to note what is <em>missing<\/em> from the proclamation.\u00a0 <!--more-->The &#8220;structure&#8221; of such proclamations varies little from year to year, and even from President to President, regardless of party.\u00a0 President Bush included, as did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/presidential-proclamation-national-day-prayer\">Obama last year<\/a>, the statement<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Congress, by Public Law 100-307, as amended, has called on the President to issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a &#8220;National Day of Prayer.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>which was <em>omitted<\/em> this year.<\/p>\n<p>While some have claimed that the recent circuit court ruling made the National Day of Prayer unConstitutional, they were mistaken.\u00a0 The ruling said the <em>statute passed by Congress<\/em> was unConstitutional.\u00a0 With respect to the NDoP and the ruling, the President remains free to make any proclamation he chooses.\u00a0 It is interesting, then, that the text of the traditional message changed to eliminate references to the statute in question.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama issued the annual proclamation marking\u00a0the National Day of Prayer, which will be 6 May this year.
