{"id":4759,"date":"2010-04-21T00:30:12","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=4759"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:16:14","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:16:14","slug":"mrff-seeks-cause-to-litigate-agitate-and-ice-cream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/21\/mrff-seeks-cause-to-litigate-agitate-and-ice-cream\/","title":{"rendered":"MRFF Seeks Cause to Litigate, Agitate&#8230;and Ice Cream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/07\/atheist-lawsuit-against-us-military-dismissed\/\">demise of its last lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0seeking an end to public religious expression in the military, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation has been searching for a cause.\u00a0 (Michael Weinstein promised to file an appeal, though\u00a0it appears he has not done so.)\u00a0 After the Trijicon scandal was <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/22\/trijicon-offers-to-remove-bible-verses-from-sights\/\">quickly defused<\/a>, Weinstein made a furtive effort to revive it a few\u00a0months later&#8211;with little public reaction.\u00a0 He also tried to attach his organization to the &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/05\/weinstein-defines-religions-assigns-followers\/\">media frenzy<\/a> without much success.\u00a0\u00a0Weinstein is struggling for relevancy even among his own supporters; a recent fundraiser garnered\u00a0few contributors.<\/p>\n<p>In his latest bid for publicity, Weinstein demanded <!--more-->the Pentagon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2010\/04\/ap_dayofprayer_controversy_042010\/\">revoke a National Day of Prayer invitation given\u00a0to Franklin Graham<\/a> because of Graham&#8217;s prior statements on Islam.\u00a0\u00a0Weinstein&#8217;s desire for exposure is so great that the self-described\u00a0&#8220;religious freedom&#8221; advocate <em>undermines<\/em> religious freedom\u00a0by\u00a0essentially proposing a &#8220;religious test&#8221;\u00a0prohibiting military members from hearing\u00a0from those who are outspoken\u00a0about their faith.<\/p>\n<p>Weinstein&#8217;s self-serving selective outrage is a demonstrable\u00a0feat of hypocrisy.\u00a0 Weinstein\u00a0said Graham should be disinvited because\u00a0his\u00a0former statements were<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>heinously hurtful [and]\u00a0bigoted&#8230;against&#8230;Islam<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weinstein omits mention of his\u00a0own silence when the military hosted a\u00a0speaker who said &#8220;heinously hurtful [and] bigoted&#8221; things about <em>Christianity<\/em>; in fact, Weinstein\u00a0has been <em>party<\/em> to those incidents that included a speaker who had not only <em>previously<\/em> denigrated Christianity, but also did so <em>at the event to which he was invited<\/em> by the military.\u00a0 Weinstein&#8217;s decision to support this cause appears to be an attempt to generate publicity similar to that surrounding <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/01\/chaplains-disinvite-frcs-perkins-over-dadt-statements\/\">Tony Perkins&#8217; dis-invitation to a February prayer luncheon<\/a>\u00a0over his views, as well as\u00a0to capitalize on publicity surrounding the recent court case\u00a0over\u00a0the National Day of Prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Another desperate gasp by the MRFF is so contrived it seems\u00a0like satire.\u00a0 The specific <em>cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre<\/em> is in a\u00a0letter to Weinstein, posted on the organization&#8217;s site, that complains of US military support for &#8220;a bulwark of the &#8216;America as a Christian Nation&#8217; crowd.&#8221;\u00a0 The offending party?<\/p>\n<p>NASCAR.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently the writer thinks Sacred Power (a Native American spirituality-themed energy company), ExtenZe, and\u00a0Budweiser are in some conspiracy to take over America for Christians.\u00a0 As a\u00a0result,\u00a0US military flybys\u00a0of NASCAR events and\u00a0military team sponsorships are &#8216;offensive.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Ignoring the ludicrous accusation, an even more interesting detail is that the complaint is written as a public letter, but it originated from <em>within<\/em> the MRFF.\u00a0 (This is not altogether uncommon for the MRFF;
