{"id":4572,"date":"2010-04-05T00:30:28","date_gmt":"2010-04-05T08:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=4572"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:16:15","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:16:15","slug":"usafa-pagan-cross-investigation-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/05\/usafa-pagan-cross-investigation-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"USAFA Pagan Cross Investigation Closed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Air Force Academy closed its investigation into the placement of the shape of a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/05\/cross-found-at-usafa-pagan-circle\/\">cross at a pagan site on the Academy grounds<\/a>.\u00a0 No new information was apparently determined, nor was any action taken.\u00a0 To their credit, the <em>Colorado Springs Gazette<\/em> printed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/articles\/academy-96589-air-force.html\">most accurate description so far<\/a> of the incident, saying<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The cross \u2013 consisting of two railroad ties propped against a boulder&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other organizations and individuals had inaccurately implied\u00a0a &#8216;large cross&#8217; was &#8216;made of railroad ties&#8217; and &#8216;carried to the site&#8217; to be &#8216;erected in the center&#8217; of the pagan circle.\u00a0 The <em>Gazette<\/em> left out only the facts the two boards were not connected\u00a0and\u00a0were already on the site before the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>In noting the end of its investigation, the Air Force refused to characterize the incident as a hate crime:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For it to be a hate crime, you have to know the motives,&#8221; [Academy spokeswoman Capt. Corinna] Jones said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is in stark contrast to some of the public reaction to the incident, including that of Michael Weinstein and TSgt Brandon Longcrier, the Air Force pagan faith leader whose photograph initiated the publicity of the incident.\u00a0 For his part, Longcrier has apparently changed his tune.\u00a0 Though he once called it a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/24\/academy-pagan-leader-fears-brainwashed-christians\/\">&#8220;hate crime&#8221; and said the Air Force &#8220;ignores us&#8221;<\/a> (referencing pagans), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.9news.com\/news\/local\/article.aspx?storyid=135875&amp;catid=346\">he now equivocates<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tech. Sgt. Brandon Longcrier, who sponsors the Earth-centered group, said he&#8217;s satisfied the investigation was thorough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It felt like something that was done maliciously, but without the evidence, I can&#8217;t say either way if it was a hate crime,&#8221; Longcrier said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His dramatic shift in tone\u00a0now aligns with the Air Force position rather than criticizing it.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the <em>Air Force Times<\/em> said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2010\/04\/ap_airforce_academy_cross_040210\/\">the Air Force reported<\/a> they<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>found no clear indication it was intended to harass members of the Earth-centered group because <strong>it was found before the academy announced<\/strong> the site would be set aside for their use, and because the <strong>site has sometimes been used by Christians and by other groups<\/strong>.
