Last Wednesday the US Senate passed a resolution stating what should have been obvious — there is no “religious test” for public office in the United States.<\/p>\n
In response to Democrat Senators questioning nominees<\/a> on their Catholic beliefs in association with the Knights of Columbus, the Senate passed a resolution<\/a> stating it was<\/p>\n the sense of the Senate that disqualifying a nominee to Federal office on the basis of membership in the Knights of Columbus violates the Constitution of the United States<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The resolution noted then-Senator and presidential candidate John F. Kennedy had similarly faced anti-Catholic bigotry: <\/p>\n Whereas then Senator Kennedy responded to the bigotry with these timeless words: “For while this year it may be a Catholic against whom the finger of suspicion is pointed, in other years it has been, and may someday be again, a Jew or a Quaker or a Unitarian or a Baptist…Today I may be the victim, but tomorrow it may be you, until the whole fabric of our harmonious society is ripped at a time of great national peril.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n That’s the kind of thing one wishes supporters of Michael “Mikey” Weinstein would remember when they attack the religious liberties of “certain kinds<\/em>” of Christians.<\/p>\n While it is only a “sense of the Senate,” resolutions by unanimous consent<\/a> are generally considered procedure<\/a> within the governance of the legislative body.<\/p>\n The resolution also stands as a stark rebuke against the multiple Democrat Senators who have questioned the religious faiths of recent nominees.<\/p>\n Via the Religion Clause<\/a> and the National Catholic Register<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
