Stennis, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, were recently highlighted for their unique exercise of religious freedom. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/305803\/kindred-spirit-heathenry-sea\">official news release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Heathenry, a religion with roots in Norse culture and mythology, is being practiced by a small, committed group of Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).<\/p>\n<p>Aviation Electrician\u2019s Mate 2nd Class Joshua Wood, from Eagle River, Alaska, is John C. Stennis\u2019 Heathen lay leader.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The story is &#8220;interesting&#8221; enough that the normally sleepy Navy news report has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2019\/jan\/3\/uss-john-c-stennis-holding-heathen-religious-servi\/\">widely<\/a> repeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/01\/07\/heathens-hold-religious-services-rooted-in-norse-paganism-aboard-aircraft-carrier\/\">across<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/military\/201901051071233064-uss-carrier-heathen-religious-services\/\">media<\/a>, though it seems to\u00a0have <!--more-->generated\u00a0little controversy (which most publishers probably wanted).\u00a0 Wood reportedly took a mythology class in high school, which, awkwardly, seems to\u00a0have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskastar.com\/2019-01-09\/heathen-sailor-eagle-river-keeps-norse-beliefs-alive-aboard-aircraft-carrier\">led to his new religious beliefs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;lay service&#8221; held in the ship&#8217;s chapel is announced over the &#8220;one-main&#8221; &#8212; the ship&#8217;s intercom &#8212; just like every other announcement (including those of other religious services).<\/p>\n<p>The Navy release cited the regulation that governed the appointment of lay leaders, which leads to an interesting question [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to Military Personnel Manual (MILPERSMAN) 1730-010, religious lay leaders will be appointed by commanding officers on the basis of volunteerism, high moral character, motivation, religious interest and a <strong>letter of certification by the appointee\u2019s religious organization<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who do you think wrote the letter from the &#8220;appointee&#8217;s religious organization&#8221;?\u00a0 There isn&#8217;t exactly a heathen institutional structure.<\/p>\n<p>This is hardly the first pagan\/heathen &#8220;religious&#8221; issue\u00a0within the US military.\u00a0 The US Army recently allowed a Soldier to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2018\/04\/26\/army-grants-religious-accommodation-for-pagan-beard\/\">start wearing a beard<\/a> so he could be a &#8220;Norse pagan.&#8221;\u00a0 Wicca and its variations of paganry have been noted in fairly <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2016\/11\/22\/are-paganism-atheism-growing-in-the-us-military\/\">large numbers at Fort Jackson<\/a> (home to the US military&#8217;s chaplain training, ironically) and <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2011\/12\/28\/senator-lists-usafa-pagan-chapel-in-government-waste\/\">the US Air Force Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The core human liberty of religious freedom &#8212; one of the &#8220;first freedoms&#8221; protected by the US Constitution&#8217;s First Amendment &#8212; is an amazing thing. While the government is not obligated to point you in the direction of hell, it also won&#8217;t stand in the way should you decide to head that direction. By its very nature, religious freedom protects the right of people to be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>And these Sailors are very wrong.<\/p>\n<p>That said, it&#8217;s a choice they&#8217;ve made.
