The Satanic Temple — the technically non-religious group whose goal is to tamp down religious expression through ridicule — is now the object of ridicule itself, as it\u00a0sued Netflix and Warner Bros<\/a> for using an apparent copy of its Baphomet statue:<\/p>\n

The organization filed a complaint Thursday saying its copyrighted statue design, known as Baphomet with Children, appeared without its permission in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a new streaming series released on Netflix last month.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Notably, the organization explicitly stated what the purpose of the statue is: <\/p>\n

TST [the Satanic Temple] designed and commissioned the TST Baphomet with Children to be a central part of its efforts to promote First Amendment values of separation of church and state and equal protection…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, it isn’t religious<\/strong> iconography. The problem, you see, is The Satanic Temple has used the religious<\/em> angle to try to get its Baphomet statue erected alongside other religious<\/em> symbols (ie, the Ten Commandments). But by outright admitting they’re just trying to make a point, they’ve negated their own constitutional argument.<\/p>\n

(Previously, The Satanic Temple created a statue and then tried to get a small town to pay for it<\/a> — because they’re so fringe it was\u00a0going to be “difficult” for them to find a use\u00a0for it.)<\/p>\n

They’re also coming across like clowns, with their own supporters questioning the decision to sue as petty and missing the point.<\/p>\n

Last week, the suit was settled<\/a> under confidential terms.<\/p>\n

It’s telling that those who oppose public displays of religion — which are constitutionally protected — have to make something up in order to be offended. And the point of their fiction isn’t to exercise,\u00a0celebrate, or promote\u00a0liberty — rather,\u00a0it’s to try to stigmatize<\/strong> that exercise of liberty\u00a0by others.<\/p>\n

In other words, rather than exercising their own freedom, they’re trying to eliminate other’s.<\/p>\n

That’s known as “we’re not happy until you’re not happy”.<\/p>\n

It’s childish, petty, and vindictive. And it is shockingly devoid of American values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
