{"id":43621,"date":"2018-09-04T00:30:27","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T03:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=43621"},"modified":"2018-09-04T01:01:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T04:01:03","slug":"conservative-chaplains-lose-lawsuit-but-lead-us-military-chaplaincy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/04\/conservative-chaplains-lose-lawsuit-but-lead-us-military-chaplaincy\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservative Chaplains Lose Lawsuit But Lead US Military Chaplaincy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33592 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/costin3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/costin3.jpg 880w, https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/costin3-300x95.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/>Howard Friedman&#8217;s Religion Clause <a href=\"http:\/\/religionclause.blogspot.com\/2018\/08\/protestant-navy-chaplains-lose.html\">reported<\/a> on the summary judgment granted in <em>In re Navy Chaplaincy<\/em>, a <em>very<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2011\/08\/29\/navy-chaplains-allege-discrimination\/\">long-running<\/a> lawsuit <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2016\/04\/11\/court-allows-navy-prayer-lawsuit-to-proceed\/\">alleging<\/a> the US Navy chaplaincy was essentially rigged for liturgical\/Catholic chaplains. The DC federal district court ruled against the chaplains.<\/p>\n<p>However, given how many years the lawsuit has been running its course, it is worth noting who is leading the US Navy chaplaincy now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chief of Chaplains (Navy): Chaplain (RAdm) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/navybio.asp?bioID=806\"><strong>Brent Scott<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2014\/08\/05\/will-mikey-weinstein-fear-us-marine-corps-chaplaincy-video\/\">Full Gospel Churches<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Deputy (Reserve): Chaplain (RAdm) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/navybio.asp?bioID=945\">Endel Lee<\/a><\/strong>, Southern Baptist<\/li>\n<li>Chief of Chaplains (Marine Corps): Chaplain (RAdm) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/navybio.asp?bioID=1057\">Gregory Todd<\/a><\/strong>, Lutheran (Missouri Synod)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, the rest of the US military chaplaincy leadership reads much the same. With one possible exception, the list reads like a who&#8217;s who of conservative and <!--more-->evangelical Christian voices (much to the chagrin of Michael &#8220;Mikey&#8221; Weinstein, no doubt).<\/p>\n<p>The exception is the new Air Force Chief of Chaplains, Chaplain (MajGen) <strong>Steven Schaick<\/strong>, who just replaced the newly retired Chaplain (MajGen) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dondi-e-costin-ph-d-major-general-retired-97119b46\/\">Dondi Costin<\/a><\/strong> (now the President of Charleston Southern University).<\/p>\n<p>While Chaplain Costin was a Southern Baptist, Chaplain Schaick is endorsed by the PCUSA.\u00a0\u00a0The thought of a liberal-leaning denomination endorsing the highest ranking Air Force chaplain would presumably make some critics of conservative Christianity giddy &#8212; except that, notably, Michael &#8220;Mikey&#8221; Weinstein has <em>already<\/em> called for one IG investigation into Chaplain Schaick.\u00a0 Chaplain Schaick attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2016\/07\/29\/mikey-weinstein-attacks-air-force-chaplains-endorsers\/\">&#8220;blatantly anti-LGBT&#8221; chaplains event<\/a> with Chaplain Costin two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The other military chaplaincy leadership includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chief of Chaplains (Army): Chaplain (MajGen) <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2016\/01\/08\/army-chief-of-chaplains-on-pbs-documentary-video\/\">Paul Hurley<\/a><\/strong>, Catholic<\/li>\n<li>Deputy Chief of Chaplains (Air Force): Chaplain (BGen) <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/51508\/baptist-promoted-to-air-force-deputy-chief-of-chaplains\">Ronald Harvell<\/a><\/strong>, Southern Baptist<\/li>\n<li>Deputy Chief of Chaplains (Army): Chaplain (BGen) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/156242\/deputy_chief_of_chaplains_chaplain_brigadier_general_thomas_l_solhjem\">Thomas Solhjem<\/a><\/strong>, Assembly of God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting cross-section of chaplains, and the military chaplaincy (across the board) has had some interesting challenges these past few years.\u00a0 For his part, Chaplain Costin was a vocal defender of religious liberty.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see how this cohort of chaplains moves forward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Howard Friedman&#8217;s Religion Clause reported on the summary judgment granted in In re Navy Chaplaincy, a very long-running lawsuit alleging the US Navy chaplaincy was essentially rigged for liturgical\/Catholic chaplains.
