{"id":4341,"date":"2010-03-23T00:30:03","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T08:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=4341"},"modified":"2010-03-22T18:25:47","modified_gmt":"2010-03-23T02:25:47","slug":"navy-advised-to-abandon-f-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/23\/navy-advised-to-abandon-f-35\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy Advised to Abandon F-35"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent article at the <em>Military Times<\/em> suggests its &#8220;time to bail&#8221; on the Navy version of the JSF (the F-35C).\u00a0 (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2010\/03\/navy_hornet_jsf_032110w\/\">online article<\/a> is a lead-in to a longer story in the print version of the <em>Military Times<\/em>.)\u00a0 The proposal\u00a0instead is that the Navy purchase more F\/A-18E\/F <em>Super Hornets<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This would not be the first time the Navy &#8220;bailed&#8221; on a joint program.\u00a0 The F-111 was also supposed to be a joint program; the Navy bailed on the F-111 &#8220;B&#8221; and later acquired the F-14 instead.\u00a0 In the 1970s, the YF-16 and YF-17 had a &#8220;fly-off&#8221; won by the YF-16.\u00a0 The Navy, which was part of the program, didn&#8217;t like the single engine F-16 and instead <!--more-->purchased the YF-17, which became the F-18.<\/p>\n<p>Both programs highlighted the drawbacks of trying to please <!--more-->multiple customers with competing requirements.\u00a0 No aircraft that does many things can do all of them well.\u00a0 One marginally successful example was the F-4, first developed by the Navy and subsequently &#8220;forced&#8221; on the Air Force, though the Air Force eventually became the largest user of\u00a0the F-4, which itself\u00a0became a formidable frontline Air Force fighter.<\/p>\n<p>Should the Navy (or any other partner) withdraw from the JSF, the per-unit cost would increase, and the program would again suffer a resulting financial (and political) hit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent article at the Military Times suggests its &#8220;time to bail&#8221; on the Navy version of the JSF (the F-35C).\u00a0 (The online article is a lead-in to a longer story in the print version of the Military Times.)\u00a0 The proposal\u00a0instead is that the Navy purchase more F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornets.
