{"id":41243,"date":"2017-07-06T00:15:49","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T03:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=41243"},"modified":"2017-07-06T00:46:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T03:46:48","slug":"symposium-seeks-to-correct-record-on-operation-kiddy-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/06\/symposium-seeks-to-correct-record-on-operation-kiddy-car\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium Seeks to Correct Record on Operation Kiddy Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41289\" src=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/kiddycar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/kiddycar.jpg 880w, https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/kiddycar-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/kiddycar-768x244.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/pacific\/operation-kiddy-car-keeping-a-korean-war-hero-s-memory-alive-1.476030\">interesting panel<\/a> was recently held in Korea that commemorated &#8212; and attempted to correct the history on &#8212; Operation Kiddy Car, the US military&#8217;s evacuation of thousands of Korean orphans during the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>The operation and the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2008\/06\/09\/book-review-battle-hymn\/\">autobiography by Dean Hess<\/a> have been previously discussed, again when <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2015\/03\/10\/fighter-pilot-who-led-operation-kiddy-car-dies\/\">Hess died in 2015<\/a>. The recent panel was held to try to re-emphasize the role of Chaplain (Col) Russell Blaisdell, whose role some feel has been unfairly ignored:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Blaisdell, his assistant Staff Sgt. Merle (Mike) Strang and South Korean social workers collected children from the streets and \u201csaved many orphans from near-certain death,\u201d according to an Air Force account of the operation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Blaisdell&#8230;persuaded Col. T.C. Rogers \u2014 the unit\u2019s director of operations and <!--more-->one of the last officers in the city \u2014 to arrange an airlift involving 16 C-54 transport planes.<\/p>\n<p>The chaplain pulled rank and commandeered trucks to rush the children and staff from the port to the Gimpo airport&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Decades ago Blaisdell declined to weigh in on his diminished role portrayed in the movie based on Hess&#8217;s book, seeking instead to focus on the saved lives &#8212; the ultimate goal of their operation.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Hess &#8212; a Christian preacher turned fighter pilot &#8212; and Blaisdell &#8212; an Air Force chaplain, appropriated government resources to nearly single-handedly execute a religious humanitarian operation that saved nearly 1,000 children.<\/p>\n<p>Were they to have done the same thing in today&#8217;s Air Force, if they weren&#8217;t court-martialed, there would be at least one critic of military Christians demanding their heads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting panel was recently held in Korea that commemorated &#8212; and attempted to correct the history on &#8212; Operation Kiddy Car, the US military&#8217;s evacuation of thousands of Korean orphans during the Korean War.
