The event began with US Navy Chaplain (Cmdr) Abuhena Saifulislam leading some foreign troops in Islamic prayers. (Saifulislam had recently performed the same ritual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/236237\/africom-chaplain-supports-military-iftar-with-us-defense-attache-office-djibouti\">for the State Department in Djibouti<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>BGen Castellanos made an interesting statement <!--more-->near the article&#8217;s conclusion [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn the U.S., there are many traditions and observances that mean a lot to us,\u201d said Castellanos to his Somali guests. \u201cIt is also our military tradition to <strong>celebrate and observe all faiths<\/strong> with those who serve with us so I am very thankful for the opportunity to share in this tradition with you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BGen Castellanos&#8217; statement briefs well, but is that really &#8220;our military tradition&#8221;? When was the last time you saw the US military &#8220;celebrate and observe&#8221; <em>any<\/em> specific faith or religious event? Quite the opposite seems to be true. Even something as benign as announcing a &#8220;Christmas&#8221; party instead of a &#8220;holiday&#8221; party will generate complaints from those with sensitive dispositions.\u00a0 It hardly seems the US military would have the moral courage to &#8220;celebrate and observe&#8221; religious faiths.<\/p>\n<p>It seems, rather, that the US military does generally <em>allow<\/em> its troops to celebrate their faiths, but as an institution it generally &#8220;celebrates and observes&#8221; <em>no<\/em> religious events (with the exception of the occasional Islamic one like this, ironically enough).<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Army BGen Miguel Castellanos, the CJTF-HOA deputy commanding general, recently hosted an Islamic iftar to celebrate the breaking of the fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
