{"id":4079,"date":"2010-03-01T00:33:44","date_gmt":"2010-03-01T08:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=4079"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:16:19","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:16:19","slug":"weinstein-claims-credit-for-bracd-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/01\/weinstein-claims-credit-for-bracd-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"Weinstein Claims Credit for BRAC&#8217;d Unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A previous article noted that Michael Weinstein likes to highlight the places that his Military Religious Freedom Foundation was <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/17\/the-mrffs-own-pattern-and-practice\/\">mentioned in the press<\/a>.\u00a0 One result of his &#8220;tooting his own horn&#8221; may be the perception of &#8220;impact&#8221; from his organization.\u00a0 Apparently, his desire to seem influential is so strong that he has digressed into fiction.<\/p>\n<p>In a long article published at an <a href=\"http:\/\/subversify.com\/2010\/02\/19\/%E2%80%98who-teacheth-my-hands-to-war%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-christian-fundamentalism-in-the-american-military\/\">independent &#8220;online magazine,&#8221;<\/a> Weinstein <!--more-->is quoted as saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Our Foundation stopped<\/em> the 523rd Attack F16 Squadron three years ago; the Air Force suddenly mothballed it \u2013 they were called, by the way, &#8220;The Crusaders&#8221; \u2013 their official Air Force logo emblazoned on the fuselages of their attack F16&#8217;s, (equipped to carry laser-guided nuclear and conventional weapons) \u2013 this logo was on their flight-suits as well as the aircraft&#8230; (emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>(For the record, Weinstein was a JAG, not a fighter pilot, as displayed by his lack of understanding of military weapons.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no such thing as a &#8220;laser guided nuclear weapon.&#8221;\u00a0 If one knows anything about such weapons, the mere suggestion is laughable.\u00a0 The descriptor sounds realistic and ominous\u00a0enough to get him quoted in the press, however, which is his goal.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nearly four years ago, this site <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/15\/the-constitution-and-military-christianity\/\">predicted this turn of events<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even Mr. Michael Weinstein\u2019s latest attack on &#8220;religion&#8221; in the Air Force will undoubtedly create misperceptions.\u00a0 Weinstein wrote a scathing opinion column in the Air Force Times that &#8220;demanded&#8221; the removal of &#8220;Christian symbology&#8221; from the patch and unit name of the 523rd Fighter Squadron <em>Crusaders<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force will probably let time solve the issue; the last round of base closures slated the 523rd to be deactivated.\u00a0<em> When the unit ceases to exist within the year, Weinstein\u2019s timing can make him seem causal<\/em>; if no one rebuts that perception, the public will see yet another case of religion &#8220;rightfully&#8221; being removed from the military. (emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As was pointed out at the time, the 2005 BRAC that closed the 523rd came out prior to Weinstein even <em>starting<\/em> his &#8220;foundation,&#8221; yet he now claims credit for the result.\u00a0 Despite a host of unsubstantiated claims of influencing the military toward his ends, Weinstein has faced a\u00a0string of legal defeats and appears willing to take credit for things over which he had no influence whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his claim that his foundation accomplished this years ago, the 523rd symbology&#8211;which even he admits no longer exists&#8211;was <em>still<\/em> a part of his most recent lawsuit (now dismissed) against the Department of Defense.\u00a0 As his interview shows, too,\u00a0he also\u00a0cites\u00a0old, invalid\u00a0data as\u00a0&#8216;proof&#8217; of\u00a0continuing\u00a0&#8216;overt Christianity&#8217; in the US military&#8211;apparently lacking any current events to support his cause.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A previous article noted that Michael Weinstein likes to highlight the places that his Military Religious Freedom Foundation was mentioned in the press.\u00a0 One result of his &#8220;tooting his own horn&#8221; may be the perception of &#8220;impact&#8221; from his organization.\u00a0 Apparently, his desire to seem influential is so strong that he has digressed into fiction.
