{"id":40684,"date":"2017-05-04T00:30:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T03:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=40684"},"modified":"2017-05-04T00:52:18","modified_gmt":"2017-05-04T03:52:18","slug":"help-for-moral-injury-requires-moral-authority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/04\/help-for-moral-injury-requires-moral-authority\/","title":{"rendered":"Help for Moral Injury Requires Moral Authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Army Alaska chaplain recently participated in a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/230616\/us-army-alaska-chaplain-conducts-training-educate-community-moral-injuries\">Holistic Healthcare Conference<\/a>&#8221; that included discussions on PTSD and moral injury.<\/p>\n<p>In a panel discussion, Chaplain (Maj) James Hall made a fascinating statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When asked about where service members could seek out help, Hall replied, \u201cit usually takes a moral authority to help someone with a moral injury.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At first it almost sounds arrogant &#8212; but, in fact, it&#8217;s true. Consider <!--more-->that moral injury has <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2016\/12\/01\/author-moral-injury-in-our-longest-wars\/\">been defined<\/a> as &#8220;a violation of your sense of what\u2019s right.&#8221; For a person to help another cope and heal with that kind of moral injury, they have to be able to speak with authority on &#8220;your sense of what&#8217;s right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Consider, too, that many cases of PTSD are said to have at least <em>some<\/em> elements of moral injury, and that one&#8217;s &#8220;sense of what&#8217;s right&#8221; is very often predicated in <em>some<\/em> part on religiously-based morals, even if not religion itself.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, extrapolate that treatment to the general population, and you can start to see a logical argument for why the US military should be <em>encouraging<\/em> &#8212; not just &#8220;making available,&#8221; but actively <em>advocating<\/em> for &#8212; at least some aspect of <strong>spiritual therapy<\/strong> in dealing with post traumatic experiences.<\/p>\n<p>There is obviously some trepidation for political sensitivities. What&#8217;s more important, though?
