{"id":39647,"date":"2017-01-19T00:20:29","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T03:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=39647"},"modified":"2017-01-19T01:45:14","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T04:45:14","slug":"army-secretary-on-the-service-and-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/19\/army-secretary-on-the-service-and-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Secretary on the Service and Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8220;What drives me personally is the view that <strong>the more the Army looks like society<\/strong> and the more voices we can bring in, <strong>the stronger that we\u2019re gonna be<\/strong>.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/a-final-salute-to-eric-fanning\/\">Eric Fanning<\/a>, outgoing Secretary of the Army<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The idea that it is good for the US military to reflect society has been around for a long time &#8212; but it is predicated on an underlying assumption: That is, society is decent, honorable, and of moral character.<\/p>\n<p>If society is <em>not<\/em> those things, then the military <em>shouldn&#8217;t<\/em> &#8220;look like&#8221; society &#8212; rather, it should be made up of men and women who are <em>better<\/em> than the average of society. The perception (truth notwithstanding)\u00a0that <!--more-->the US military is made up of honorable and upright troops is at least part of the reason the military routinely ranks at the top of respected institutions every year.<\/p>\n<p>What the US military does <em>not<\/em> need is a cross-section of a society that is obese, criminal, entitled, addicted, self-centered, or otherwise of ill-repute &#8212; simply because that&#8217;s what society &#8220;looks like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The military does often reflect the society from which it is drawn, but that is as much an acknowledgement of the <em>problems<\/em> within the military as it is the achievements.
