As noted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2006\/06\/13\/fighter-pilot-traditions\/\">longer discussions on the tradition<\/a>, callsigns are sometimes the result of a notable action, a physical trait, or a play on the pilot&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the current Chief of Staff of the Air Force is Gen David &#8220;Fingers&#8221; Goldfein, playing off his name and the James Bond reference.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Air Force Base recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/213020\/thunderbolt-nominated-lance-p-sijan-air-force-leadership-award\">issued a press release<\/a> about an award recognition that <!--more-->didn&#8217;t seem to realize the backstory to the fighter pilot&#8217;s callsign, which was &#8220;Sheet.&#8221; Now, why would a fighter pilot be called &#8220;Sheet?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Luke is proud to have Maj. Matthew \u201cSheet\u201d Hoyt, 54th Fighter Group F-16 chief instructor and 54th Operations Support Squadron chief of weapons and tactics nominated for the Lance P.
