A near firestorm was raised on Monday when Time<\/em>‘s Amy Sullivan\u00a0reported<\/a> (and a variety of sources<\/a> repeated<\/a>) that the Obama family had decided that Camp David’s Evergreen Chapel would be its “home church.”\u00a0 The White House staff contradicted<\/a> the Time<\/em> article, saying that the Obamas are still looking for a “church home.”\u00a0 The Time<\/em> contributor is “standing by<\/a>” her story, saying that the fact that the Obamas are intending to attend the Chapel while at Camp David justifies her report.<\/p>\n

More interesting, however, was the intense scrutiny given to the Chaplain currently associated with Camp David.<\/p>\n

Camp David is officially known<\/a> as “Naval Support Facility Thurmont,” and it is a run as a military facility.\u00a0 As such, it has a military chapel with a\u00a0Naval Chaplain.<\/p>\n

Navy Chaplain (Lt) Carey Cash\u00a0is reported to be the current Chaplain at Camp David.\u00a0 Sullivan called<\/a> him “the polar opposite of Jeremiah Wright,” noting that he was a Southern Baptist.\u00a0 The Military Religious Freedom Foundation\u00a0has blasted Cash’s connections with Campus Crusade for Christ’s Military Ministry<\/a>.\u00a0 Campus Crusade\u00a0also carries<\/a> Cash’s book, A Table in the Presence<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 The book describes his experiences in the opening days of ground combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom, including how he led Marines to Christ and baptized them in Hussein’s newly-liberated palaces.<\/p>\n

Michael Weinstein and his MRFF have frequently criticized<\/a> Campus Crusade’s ministry to the military, including\u00a0calling<\/a> it a “blight on America” and an “example of extreme bigotry.”\u00a0 Weinstein\u00a0has also named Campus Crusade in a lawsuit<\/a> against the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

In this case, the MRFF\u00a0has\u00a0insinuated that Obama’s decision to attend the Camp David Chapel\u00a0(he reportedly “enjoys the pastor there”) is an endorsement of the Chaplain’s views.\u00a0 As is customary, the MRFF is calling for the Chaplain’s ouster.\u00a0\u00a0Rather than supporting the Chaplain, the MRFF has said that Obama should be “ridding” the military of\u00a0“such Chaplains and organizations.”<\/p>\n
