Butler Brigade of Veterans for Peace, an anti-war veterans group, recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albawaba.com\/loop\/us-military-veterans-rally-support-muslims-810878\">held a rally<\/a> outside a mosque in response to &#8220;bigotry&#8221; in the US presidential race:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Supporters of Veterans for Peace carried white and black flags featuring the group\u2019s logo, a white dove set against a combat helmet, and displayed signs reading \u201cMuslims are not our enemy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Boston Police Commissioner William Evans also spoke and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2016\/02\/27\/veterans-hold-rally-support-muslims\/dLzmUNnl8WIAjRfRnKrzyH\/story.html\">made the somewhat unusual statement<\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re all Muslims deep down. We all yearn for peace.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That seems to recall <!--more-->sentiment after the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, when social media warriors started saying <em>Je suis Charlie<\/em> &#8212; a noble attempt at solidarity that ignored who &#8220;Charlie&#8221; really was.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fine thing to defend someone&#8217;s right to do or say something &#8212; but that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to agree with it or claim to be &#8220;one of them.&#8221; In fact, there is absolutely nothing wrong to being strongly <em>against<\/em> someone&#8217;s speech, conduct, or ideology, while still defending their right to say, do, or believe it.<\/p>\n<p>The concept that one needs to <em>be<\/em> that which is opposed or victimized may be poetic and inspire an emotional response, but it is not necessarily\u00a0wise nor rational.<\/p>\n<p>Religious freedom is important for all in the United States, but we are <em>not<\/em> &#8220;all Muslims deep down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is also notably ironic that veterans and law enforcement will rally to say &#8220;we&#8217;re all Muslims&#8221; in the face of <em>words<\/em> by political candidates, while they won&#8217;t rally to say &#8220;we&#8217;re all <em>Christians<\/em>&#8221; when government <em>actions<\/em>\u00a0run entrepeneurs out of business for acting in accordance with their Christian beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>If a Muslim baker refused to provide a wedding cake for a homosexual ceremony\u00a0and was fined out of business by the government, would these US vets and police still be &#8220;all Muslims deep down?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Smedley D.
