{"id":34472,"date":"2016-01-26T00:30:52","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T03:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=34472"},"modified":"2016-11-24T22:15:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T01:15:57","slug":"fallen-marines-memorialized-with-12-white-crosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/26\/fallen-marines-memorialized-with-12-white-crosses\/","title":{"rendered":"Fallen Marines Memorialized with 12 White Crosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34473\" src=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/marinecross.jpg\" alt=\"marinecross\" width=\"879\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/marinecross.jpg 879w, https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/marinecross-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/marinecross-768x245.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px\" \/>The 12 US Marines lost last week when their two CH-53E helicopters failed to return to base have been declared deceased.\u00a0 They were previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/186793\/marines-announce-deceased-ch-53-incident-hawaii-biographies-included\">identified here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/pacific\/lives-of-12-marines-lost-in-helicopter-crash-recalled-at-hawaii-memorial-1.390227\">memorial ceremony last Friday<\/a>, their fellow Marines placed combat gear on white crosses in a modified battlefield cross:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Forty-eight Marines solemnly adorned white crosses with flight vests, helmets, goggles and Hawaiian leis Friday in tribute to the dozen men lost when two helicopters collided during training&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Commanding officer LtCol Eric Purcell quoted the Marines&#8217; Hymn:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven\u2019s scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then he paused, fighting to maintain his composure. \u201cWell, St. Peter, you\u2019ve got 12 of the finest,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As is often tradition, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/flight-gear-adorns-crosses-for-12-marines-killed-in-hawaii-1.390090\">bagpiper played<\/a> &#8220;Amazing Grace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Military aviation is a dangerous profession, even in training, as the community is so often tragically reminded.
