{"id":340,"date":"2009-07-08T02:37:37","date_gmt":"2009-07-08T06:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=340"},"modified":"2012-01-08T19:43:48","modified_gmt":"2012-01-08T22:43:48","slug":"muslim-chaplains-impact-us-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/08\/muslim-chaplains-impact-us-military\/","title":{"rendered":"Muslim Chaplains Impact US Military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In June, two\u00a0Muslim military Chaplains from France and the United States met in Paris for a religious diversity <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/faithworld\/2009\/06\/08\/french-us-imams-talk-about-being-muslim-military-chaplains\/\">conference<\/a>.\u00a0 The American Chaplain, Lt Commander Abuhena Saifulislam, is a US Navy Chaplain who\u00a0emigrated\u00a0from Bangladesh in 1989, becoming a Navy Imam in 1999.\u00a0 He is\u00a0endorsed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isna.net\/home.aspx\">Islamic Society of North America<\/a>\u00a0(ISNA).\u00a0 He was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.america.gov\/st\/diversity-english\/2008\/February\/20080204123903cpataruk0.6934015.html\">reportedly<\/a> assigned to the Marines, making him the first Muslim Chaplain<!--more-->\u00a0in the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/usnisl.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Chaplain Saif has a history of involvement in significant events, including being the first Muslim Chaplain in Guantanamo and leading the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenselink.mil\/news\/newsarticle.aspx?id=47684\">call to prayer<\/a> at a Pentagon iftar and one at President Bush&#8217;s White House in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Like many people of faith, the Chaplain&#8217;s beliefs are an integral part of his life.\u00a0 He\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenselink.mil\/news\/newsarticle.aspx?id=930\">said<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Islam is not just a religion to Muslims. It is a way of life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just as those of other faiths who serve in the US military, the Chaplain intends to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.america.gov\/st\/washfile-english\/2007\/June\/20070629130918xjsnommis0.1244013.html\">demonstrate<\/a> the consistency of his faith with his profession:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chaplain Saif&#8230;[personifies] the notion that there is nothing incompatible about serving both Islam and the US military.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Being a Muslim and a contributing member of the US military is &#8220;not an oxymoron.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like all Chaplains, he serves all:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Ninety-nine percent of the people who come to me for counseling are not Muslim,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;We, as chaplains, support everybody.\u00a0 When it comes to personal relationships, marriage, drugs, alcohol, stress or financial problems, religion doesn&#8217;t play a role. We provide support, grieving in death, anything,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I counsel service members before they go to battle, and the majority of them are non-Muslims.\u00a0 I counsel equally, in the same fashion.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite other reports of controversy, the Chaplain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.america.gov\/st\/washfile-english\/2008\/February\/20080228160352eaifas0.9701502.html\">reported<\/a> a warm reception as an Imam in the US military:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have personally been well-received into the military. I have been treated as an equal, and have been able to practice my faith like anyone else. We are allowed to have Friday services during work hours, and I am able to pray during work hours.
