{"id":33888,"date":"2015-10-28T00:10:12","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T03:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=33888"},"modified":"2016-11-24T22:32:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T01:32:57","slug":"fighter-pilot-followed-rules-but-must-defend-his-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/28\/fighter-pilot-followed-rules-but-must-defend-his-wings\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighter Pilot Followed Rules, but Must Defend his Wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In January, a US Navy F\/A-18E <em>Super Hornet<\/em> flew over Berkeley, California, creating smiles, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeleyside.com\/2015\/01\/28\/fighter-jet-over-berkeley-was-nod-to-cal-grad-student-navy-is-investigating\/\">a news story<\/a>, and setting off a few car alarms.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy &#8220;investigated&#8221; and determined the pilot (&#8220;naval aviator&#8221;) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/navy\/navy-jet-pilot-who-buzzed-berkeley-broke-no-federal-rules-officials-say-1.375404\">violated no rules<\/a>. In fact, he was under FAA control at the time, and Air Traffic Control approved his altitude and flight path.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the pilot will still\u00a0have to defend his wings and flying career:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Navy brass has called for a Field Naval Aviator Evaluation Board to \u201cexamine the aeronautical judgment of the aviator during the flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board is not a judicial or disciplinary body but does recommend whether an aviator \u201cshould retain flight status.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(A similar board permanently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2010\/03\/23\/fighter-pilots-grounded-after-flyby\/\">grounded two Navy pilots in 2010<\/a> for a Georgia Tech flyby.)<\/p>\n<p>A commander can convene the FNAEB process for a fairly broad range of perceived infractions, including insinuations of &#8220;discredit to Naval aviation.&#8221; The FNAEB can have a range of results, but only one in that range is &#8220;good&#8221; (keeping your wings), while there are a host of others that are &#8220;bad&#8221; &#8212; including losing your wings.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the best you can do is break even &#8212; and there are <em>lots<\/em> of opportunities to lose.<\/p>\n<p>Presumably, the Navy was a bit miffed that he created a fuss by flying over Berkeley, even if he broke no rules when he did so.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Also at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/10\/27\/officials-navy-pilot-who-buzzed-berkeley-broke-no-rules\/74677802\/\">Military Times<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In January, a US Navy F\/A-18E Super Hornet flew over Berkeley, California, creating smiles, a news story, and setting off a few car alarms.
