{"id":33561,"date":"2015-09-09T00:35:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T03:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/?p=33561"},"modified":"2016-11-24T22:42:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T01:42:00","slug":"atheist-christians-playing-victim-atheists-are-real-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/09\/atheist-christians-playing-victim-atheists-are-real-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Atheist: Christians Playing Victim, Atheists are Real Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Torpy, a former US Army Captain and current atheist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/story\/military\/pentagon\/2015\/08\/31\/religion-report-humanist-concerns\/71476168\/\">recently claimed<\/a> that Christians in the US military are &#8220;play[ing] the victim&#8221; while atheists are the <em>real<\/em> victims:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are not alone in suffering from what has been a largely successful tactic for a subset of Christians to play the victim,&#8221; said Jason Torpy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Journalist Leo Shane of the Military Times made the regrettable decision to drop any qualifiers, presenting Torpy&#8217;s assertions as fact [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Torpy and his group are hoping&#8230;the [IG] will go beyond the <strong>unsubstantiated problems<\/strong> posed by Congress and include some of the <strong>actual discrimination faced by humanists and atheists<\/strong> that he detailed in conversations with the office.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to redirect to <strong>real problems<\/strong>,&#8221; [he said].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of the issues raised by Congress have <!--more-->indeed been anecdotal, just as some atheist\u00a0claims are. Torpy seems to dismiss out of hand those issues that are clearly &#8220;substantiated,&#8221; however, as if it is necessary to demean what he calls a &#8220;Christian victimhood agenda&#8221; to elevate the status of his own complaints.<\/p>\n<p>And what are his complaints?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They include the inability of troops to list &#8220;humanism&#8221; as their religious preference and the lack of chaplain assistance for atheist and humanist service members.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So Torpy thinks Christians are &#8220;play[ing] the victim&#8221; when, say, a chaplain is punished for mentioning the Bible &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2015\/02\/18\/congressmen-seek-army-review-over-chaplains-punishment\/\">Chaplain Joseph\u00a0Lawhorn is a point of <em>fact<\/em><\/a>, not conjecture &#8212; but <em>Torpy <\/em>isn&#8217;t &#8220;playing a victim&#8221; because atheists can put &#8220;atheist&#8221; on their dogtags but not &#8220;humanist&#8221;? (Full disclosure: Jason Torpy runs the organization <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2014\/12\/10\/army-punishes-chaplain-for-mentioning-faith\/\">cited in Chaplain Lawhorn&#8217;s punishment<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>And, in the never-ending argument over <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2013\/08\/06\/atheist-misrepresents-facts-in-crusade-for-atheist-chaplains\/\">atheist chaplains<\/a>: atheists and humanists have precisely the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2013\/08\/05\/atheist-chaplain-canard-continues\/\">same access to chaplains<\/a> as any <em>other<\/em> non-religious group.\u00a0 To use Torpy&#8217;s language, where are his &#8220;<em>real<\/em> problems&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>For a &#8220;freethinker,&#8221; Torpy isn&#8217;t being very rational.<\/p>\n<p>Shane closes with an interesting claim:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Christian groups have already criticized the report for focusing too much on administrative actions against troops and not enough on subtler intimidation and discouragement of displays of faith, a much more widespread problem in the ranks in their view.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oddly, Shane doesn&#8217;t name or cite any of the &#8220;Christian groups&#8221; he is vaguely characterizing.\u00a0 Searching the traditional ones who might speak up on this issue (FRC, AFA, Liberty Institute, etc.) doesn&#8217;t yield an obvious &#8220;criticism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, more than one site has <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/2015\/07\/27\/inspector-general-releases-report-on-military-religious-freedom\/\">pointed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Torpy, a former US Army Captain and current atheist, recently claimed that Christians in the US military are &#8220;play[ing] the victim&#8221; while atheists are the real victims: &#8220;We are not alone in suffering from what has been a largely successful tactic for a subset of Christians to play the victim,&#8221; said Jason Torpy.
