{"id":28856,"date":"2014-04-25T00:30:28","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T03:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=28856"},"modified":"2016-09-23T09:33:35","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T12:33:35","slug":"us-government-to-defend-mount-soledad-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/25\/us-government-to-defend-mount-soledad-cross\/","title":{"rendered":"US Government to Defend Mount Soledad Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Justice has said it will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/us\/administration-lawyers-to-defend-san-diego-cross-as-war-memorial-1.277469\">&#8220;strongly&#8221; defend the Mount Soledad cross<\/a>\u00a0(as it has <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/19\/justice-department-defends-mount-soledad-memorial\/\">said before<\/a>), the subject of a continuous legal battle for more than 25 years.\u00a0 The cross was ruled unconstitutional again <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/17\/mount-soledad-memorial-cross-ruled-unconstitutional-again\/\">in December 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Obama administration lawyers have told the Supreme Court they will strongly defend the 29-foot-tall cross atop Mount Soledad in San Diego as a memorial to the nation\u2019s war veterans and not an unconstitutional promotion of Christianity by the government&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The cross was aloft more 35 years before a 1989 lawsuit claimed <!--more-->it was unconstitutional &#8212; and appeals courts agreed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli said&#8230;the 9th Circuit\u2019s earlier ruling was \u201cwrong\u201d and needs to be overturned&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States remains fully committed to preserving the Mount Soledad cross as an appropriate memorial to our nation\u2019s veterans,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Liberty Institute has been behind an effort to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/29\/campaign-begins-to-protect-memorial-crosses\/\">protect religious imagery in war memorials<\/a>.\u00a0 In that same vein, Congress tried, unsuccessfully, to pass a law <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/30\/us-house-passes-bills-on-religion-at-war-memorials\/\">specifically protecting memorials<\/a> with religious symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a few claims to the contrary, no part of American law requires society to scrub religious symbols from public view.
