{"id":28353,"date":"2014-02-25T00:45:43","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T03:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=28353"},"modified":"2016-10-01T23:36:38","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T02:36:38","slug":"smsgt-monk-awarded-meritorious-service-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/25\/smsgt-monk-awarded-meritorious-service-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"SMSgt Monk Awarded Meritorious Service Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Liberty Institute, which has represented SMSgt Philip Monk in his <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/22\/air-force-snco-claims-firing-over-religion\/\">allegation of religious discrimination<\/a> against the US Air Force, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/Big-Peace\/2014\/02\/17\/Christian-Airman-Relieved-of-Duty-for-Marriage-Beliefs-Now-Granted-Military-Honors\">announced that SMSgt Monk<\/a> had been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onenewsnow.com\/legal-courts\/2014\/02\/19\/prestigious-award-for-a-persecuted-air-force-smsgt\">awarded the Meritorious Service Medal<\/a> for the time period covering his last assignment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Monk&#8217;s attorney, Mike Berry of Liberty Institute, says the Air Force has recognized the outstanding job Monk did as first sergeant&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Berry sees the award as a testament to Monk&#8217;s courage and conviction&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For a long time his future and even his military retirement and pension were kind of up in the air and we weren&#8217;t really sure what was going to happen to him,&#8221; Berry continues. &#8220;And yet now we have the Air Force coming out and awarding him this prestigious <!--more-->military honor for his tenure there at that unit.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As some others have noted, the MSM is a &#8220;common&#8221; award for Airmen of Monk&#8217;s rank and position as they leave one assignment and move to another &#8212; but that is essentially the point. The Air Force <em>could<\/em> have withheld the award, and some critics clearly believe they should have not only withheld it but <em>punished<\/em> Monk as well.<\/p>\n<p>There were <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/15\/air-force-investigation-finds-no-religious-discrimination\/\">very public accusations<\/a> leveled against SMSgt Monk.
