{"id":2834,"date":"2010-01-07T00:30:52","date_gmt":"2010-01-07T08:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=2834"},"modified":"2010-01-06T21:33:30","modified_gmt":"2010-01-07T05:33:30","slug":"fighter-pilots-and-pigs-in-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/07\/fighter-pilots-and-pigs-in-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighter Pilots and Pigs in Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fighter aircraft are, by stereotype, fast, maneuverable, and nimble jets capable of amazing feats of dogfighting, turning, and speed.<\/p>\n<p>What many people fail to realize, however, is that most\u00a0fighters are only stereotypical &#8220;yank and bank&#8221; dogfighters when they are stripped down to their bare essentials and flown at low altitude.\u00a0 When loaded with sensor pods, electronics equipment, weapons, and external fuel tanks, virtually every fighter becomes a &#8220;truck&#8221; or &#8220;bus&#8221; rather than a <!--more-->sports car.\u00a0 When flown at higher altitudes, the thinner generally air reduces the thrust available from the engine, making the increased weight even more pronounced.\u00a0 They have a limited ability to turn or accelerate, and may have maximum speed limitations.\u00a0 At a minimum, this is true of the F-16, F-15E, F\/A-18, and (to a lesser extent) the F-22.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/aircraft.htm\">aircraft descriptions<\/a>.)\u00a0 It&#8217;s kind of like buying a Mustang, and then using it to tow a trailer.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, when fighter pilots are driven to high altitudes in heavyweight configurations, they sometimes perjoratively talk about being &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/fighterpilotspeak.htm#pigs\">pigs in space<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Despite the apparent <em>Muppets<\/em> reference, it&#8217;s simply\u00a0a way to describe being underpowered and overweight&#8211;which is not a place any fighter pilot likes to be.<\/p>\n<p>See other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/fighterpilotspeak.htm\">fighter pilot terms and lingo<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fighter aircraft are, by stereotype, fast, maneuverable, and nimble jets capable of amazing feats of dogfighting, turning, and speed.
