During a lengthy interview with the Baptist Press<\/a>, former (and potentially future) Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee talked about religious freedom — and the military:<\/p>\n

The American people must be willing to stand up for religious liberty, Huckabee said.<\/p>\n

“The government’s job is not to say you can’t have a nativity scene, you can’t sing a Christmas carol, you can’t wear colors of red and green at Christmastime,” he said. “It’s the exact opposite. The government is prohibited from getting involved at all, making any decisions. It’s the role of citizens to express themselves if their expression infringed upon someone else.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those appear to be references to recent issues in the US military<\/a> and the Veteran’s Administration<\/a>. Huckabee later specifically mentioned the military:<\/p>\n

The military is another battleground for religious freedom, Huckabee said.<\/p>\n

“We’re having chaplains told, ‘Put your Bibles out of sight, don’t give one away, don’t pray in Jesus’ name,'” he said. “That’s unconscionable.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the US military. Presidents often have their “key issues” with respect to the military. For President George Bush, it was care; for President Obama, it was reportedly DADT<\/a>. If Huckabee were to become President with this perspective about religious freedom, the implications to the military could be interesting, particularly given the current social environment.<\/p>\n
