{"id":27526,"date":"2013-12-27T02:29:02","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T05:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=27526"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:04:13","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:04:13","slug":"us-navy-highlights-chaplains-in-foxholes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/27\/us-navy-highlights-chaplains-in-foxholes\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy Highlights Chaplains in Foxholes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On December 7th, the US Navy chaplain corps <a href=\"http:\/\/chaplaincorps.navylive.dodlive.mil\/2013\/12\/05\/honoring-the-legacy-of-chaplain-kirkpatrick-and-chaplain-schmitt-on-the-72nd-anniversary-of-pearl-harbor\/\">memorialized two chaplains<\/a> who died in the line of duty during the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Chaplain (CAPT) Leroy Kirkpatrick, aboard the USS <em>Arizona<\/em>, became the first Navy chaplain to die in what became known as World War II. Chaplain (Lt) Aloysius Schmitt, aboard the USS <em>Oklahoma<\/em>, was the first Roman Catholic chaplain killed in the war.<\/p>\n<p>Few may realize that two years later the US Navy launched the USS <em>Schmitt<\/em> (DE-676) and the USS <em>Kirkpatrick<\/em> (DE-318), two of only <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Navy_Chaplain_Corps#Ships_named_for_Navy_chaplains\">seven US Navy warships<\/a> named after chaplains.<\/p>\n<p>The Chaplain of the Marine Corps, Chaplain (RADM) Margaret <!--more-->Kibben, visited the USS <em>Arizona<\/em> memorial in November and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/117670\/chaplain-marine-corps-pays-respect-uss-arizonas-fallen#.Uq4YpE2A2Uk\">recalled Chaplain Kirkpatrick&#8217;s sacrifice<\/a> at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was profoundly moved by the fact that we are the recipients of a history that so many chaplains have laid out for us, and a hero that Chaplain Kirkpatrick is, it really is what being a chaplain is all about,\u201d Kibben said. \u201cSo for me, it was incredibly humbling, it was the weight of responsibility for chaplains to live that legacy.
