{"id":2704,"date":"2009-12-29T07:12:24","date_gmt":"2009-12-29T15:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=2704"},"modified":"2009-12-29T07:12:24","modified_gmt":"2009-12-29T15:12:24","slug":"fighter-pilots-play-the-villain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/29\/fighter-pilots-play-the-villain\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighter Pilots Play the Villain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2009\/12\/airforce_aggressors_121309\/\">interesting article at the <em>Air Force Times<\/em><\/a> goes into more detail about a previously discussed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/10\/dream-jobs-in-the-us-air-force\/\">&#8220;dream job&#8221;<\/a> in the US Air Force: playing the bad guy.\u00a0 Air Force pilots fly American fighters but train to replicate the threat of potential adversaries.\u00a0 They then use those skills to &#8220;defend their homeland&#8221; during major exercises.<\/p>\n<p>(Fighter units frequently use their own assets to simulate an air threat, a technique known as flying &#8220;red air.&#8221;\u00a0 However, aggressor units specifically train to precisely replicate foreign tactics for large force scenarios.)<\/p>\n<p>The article indicates, perhaps a little too matter-of-factly, that the US Air Force once had multiple squadrons of Russian-built fighters:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the days that the U.S. considered the Soviet Union its biggest threat, four squadrons of airmen flew Russian-made MiG-21s or Su-27 fighters to lend authenticity to their job. <!--more-->Now, Toth\u2019s squadrons fly Boeing\u2019s F-16s and General Dynamics\u2019 F-15s given special paint jobs and modified with sensors and radars to look like Russian, Chinese or North Korean fighters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The US Air Force did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123031752\">declassify (in 2006) its use of Russian-built fighters<\/a> in the early 1980s.\u00a0 The article also misidentifies the manufacturers of the F-16 (once General Dynamics, now Lockheed) and F-15 (Boeing).<\/p>\n<p>One of the more interesting aspects of the article is its revelation of the depth to which military fighter pilots assume their roles, even if its playing the villain.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chinese flags and a portrait of Russia\u2019s Lenin that adorn the 18th&#8217;s headquarters put the pilots in the enemy\u2019s mindset.
