{"id":26992,"date":"2013-11-20T03:08:39","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T06:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=26992"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:20:54","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:20:54","slug":"religious-leaders-seek-to-help-with-moral-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/20\/religious-leaders-seek-to-help-with-moral-injury\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious Leaders Seek to Help with Moral Injury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> revisited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/ct-met-veterans-moral-injury-20131111,0,1663817.story\">the issue of &#8220;moral injury&#8221;<\/a> in returning US combat veterans.\u00a0 The term is distinct from PTSD and is defined in the article as<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the soul-scarring mental condition described by experts as &#8220;moral injury,&#8221; or the internal conflict a soldier can experience after participating in wartime atrocities that contradict personal values.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/07\/returning-soldiers-in-need-of-soul-repair\/\">Other\u00a0groups<\/a> have similarly tried to\u00a0recruit and train churches to help these veterans, as they feel they&#8217;re more likely to open up to a religious leader than someone in their chain of command.\u00a0 Said a chaplain:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They are on a faith mission,&#8221; said Maj. Peter Strong, a chaplain with the U.S. Army Reserve, describing soldiers who come to him for help. Strong is one of the founders of Military Outreach USA, a Christian-based organization in Libertyville.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they come to your church, they&#8217;re not looking for a set of rules and regulations. They are looking for a God who can forgive them for the things they&#8217;ve done,&#8221; Strong said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rabbi Harold Robinson helped explain the concept of &#8220;moral injury,&#8221; and essentially noted that it would be surprising if returning veterans who experienced combat did <em>not<\/em> experience it to some degree:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rabbi Harold Robinson, director of the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council in New York, said that it is hard to imagine that any 20-year-old veteran would be able to return to civilian society without internal struggles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the one hand, you have this sense of having done your duty,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and on the other hand, you have been involved in horrific events that, deep down inside you, you know humanity is not supposed to be like.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How do you add in, &#8216;How did I come home safer than anybody else?
