Ford, christens the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=77579\">US Navy christened<\/a> its newest carrier the USS <em>Gerald R. Ford<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I christen thee United States Ship Gerald R. Ford,&#8221; said [Susan Ford] Bales, breaking the bottle across the bow. &#8220;May God bless this ship and all those who sail her.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>President Ford served as a LtCmdr in the Navy.\u00a0 (He was also <!--more-->the first, and only, Vice President <em>and<\/em> President not to be elected to those offices.)<\/p>\n<p>The Ford will be the first carrier not to have a steam catapult &#8212; but an <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/21\/new-catapult-to-launch-navy-aircraft\/\">electromagnetic catapult<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>While this may be shocking for some to hear, not everyone agrees with the <a href=\"http:\/\/coastguard.dodlive.mil\/2013\/10\/building-the-national-security-cutter-christening\/\">longtime maritime tradition<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/article\/20131103\/NEWS04\/311030002\">christening US naval vessels<\/a>.\u00a0 It seems a few military atheists find it objectionable that the US government participates in a &#8220;blessing&#8221; and calls upon God&#8217;s favor for the vessel and &#8220;all who sail her.&#8221;\u00a0 Interestingly, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, while disagreeing, thinks its not worth fighting about.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151709226252401&amp;id=221399971203795\">Said the MAAF<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s wrong for the government to &#8220;Christian&#8221; a ship, but it&#8217;s quickly forgotten.
