{"id":26572,"date":"2013-11-06T00:34:29","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T03:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=26572"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:27:24","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:27:24","slug":"australians-rebuff-change-to-known-unto-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/06\/australians-rebuff-change-to-known-unto-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Australians Rebuff Change to &#8220;Known Unto God&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems atheist Jason Torpy has an Australian ideological doppleganger.<\/p>\n<p>Reports from Australia indicate the commission in charge of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/\">Australian War Memorial<\/a> had quietly <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/australian-war-memorial-god-reference-20710432\">planned to remove the phrase<\/a> &#8220;known unto God&#8221; from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/2013\/10\/29\/australian-war-memorial-keeps-known-unto-god-on-unknown-soldier-tomb-after\/\">tomb of their unknown soldier<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The sandstone war memorial opened in 1941 to commemorate Australians killed in World War I and is among Canberra&#8217;s most popular tourist attractions.<\/p>\n<p>[Memorial director Brendan Nelson] had proposed replacing the phrase &#8220;known unto God,&#8221; attributed to British writer Rudyard Kipling, with the inscription: &#8220;We do not know this Australian&#8217;s name, we never will.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/news\/nsw\/a-row-over-gods-place-war-memorial-retreats-on-secret-plan-to-replace-christian-epitaph-with-keating-speech\/story-fni0cx12-1226748591790\">some complained<\/a> it was an intentional effort to &#8220;de-Christianize&#8221; <!--more-->the memorial, the commission said it was an attempt to memorialize a speech from an Australian Prime Minister in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;compromise&#8221; now involves adding an inscription in another location:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The memorial&#8217;s governing council has settled on a compromise that will include Keating&#8217;s 1993 words \u2014 &#8220;He is all of them, and he is one of us&#8221; \u2014 being inscribed in the stone surrounding the soldier&#8217;s grave.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For his part, Jason Torpy &#8212; a former Army Captain and current atheist &#8212; is offended by all public displays of religion, even if he only <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/18\/atheists-object-to-camp-pendleton-cross\/\">reads about them on the internet<\/a>.\u00a0 Still, he is one of the few with the intellectul consistency to demand that such displays be removed <em>everywhere<\/em> &#8212; even <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/09\/atheist-wants-cross-removed-from-arlington-a-sacred-shrine\/\">from Arlington National Cemetery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancealert.org\/2013\/10\/29\/australian-war-memorial-keeps-god-reference\/\">the ADF<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/2013\/10\/29\/5285584\/australian-war-memorial-keeps.html\">the Star-Telegram<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems atheist Jason Torpy has an Australian ideological doppleganger.
