{"id":26334,"date":"2013-10-28T00:45:31","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T03:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=26334"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:31:19","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:31:19","slug":"us-army-orders-halt-to-christian-extremist-briefings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/28\/us-army-orders-halt-to-christian-extremist-briefings\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army Orders Halt to Christian Extremist Briefings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Liberty Institute, the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, and the Family Research Council &#8212; all members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/militaryfreedom.org\/\">Restore Military Religious Freedom Coalition<\/a> &#8212; successfully waged a campaign to have the US Army order an end to briefings which labeled mainstream Christian groups &#8220;extremist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2013\/10\/24\/exclusive-army-halts-training-program-that-labeled-christians-as-extremists\/\">Todd Starnes at FoxNews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOn several occasions over the past few months, media accounts have highlighted instances of Army instructors supplementing programs of instruction and including information or material that is inaccurate, objectionable and otherwise inconsistent with current Army policy,\u201d Army Sec. John McHugh wrote to military leaders in a memorandum I obtained.<\/p>\n<p>McHugh \u201cdirected that Army leaders cease all briefings, command presentations or training on the subject of extremist organizations or activities until that program of instruction and training has been created and disseminated,\u201d Army spokesman Col. David Patterson, Jr., tells me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Multiple briefings were presented as evidence of a widespread <!--more-->problem of Equal Opportunity officers calling Christians &#8220;extremists.&#8221;\u00a0 Each time, the Army responded by saying it was an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/afa-labeled-a-domestic-hate-group-by-military-officers-seriously-107665\/\">isolated incident<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 It appears Secretary McHugh found a\u00a0trend\u00a0in those incidents.\u00a0 The most recent briefing had resulted in five Congressman sending a letter to the Army expressing concern:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis most recent mislabeling of a Christian organization reflects what appears to be a troubling trend of religious intolerance in the military,\u201d Rep. Doug Lamborn wrote in a letter signed by Reps. Tim Huelskamp, Steve Scalise, John Fleming and Joseph Pitts. \u201cWe are very troubled.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McHugh&#8217;s letter didn&#8217;t mince words or otherwise imply the Army was reacting only to false media reports.\u00a0 He bluntly said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the instructors used material that is \u201cinaccurate, objectionable and otherwise inconsistent with current Army policy&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe groups identified in the instruction were not \u2018extremist\u2019 organizations as that term is defined in Army Regulation,\u201d McHugh wrote in his memorandum.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The US military had also been accused of using the Southern Poverty Law Center, a private left-leaning group, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/18\/us-military-using-splc-to-designate-christian-hate-groups\/\">as an official resource<\/a>.\u00a0 The Army now says that earlier this year the use of outside groups for such information was &#8220;cautioned&#8221; against:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>commanders and other leaders were cautioned that they should not use lists of \u2018extremists,\u2019 \u2018hate groups,\u2019 \u2018radical factions\u2019 or the like compiled by any outside non-governmental groups or organizations for briefings, command presentations, or as a shortcut to determining if a group or activity is considered to be extremist.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The SPLC is apparently still listed as a resource in the Equal Opportunity course at Patrick AFB.<\/p>\n<p>Christians in the US military had expressed concern that their religious beliefs were being declared inconsistent with military values.\u00a0 One specifically noted that the briefers indicated he was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2013\/10\/23\/does-army-consider-christians-tea-party-terror-threat\/\">prohibited from contributing to these Christian &#8220;hate&#8221; groups<\/a> &#8212; which he currently <em>did<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the impact to religious liberty in the military was not hypothetical.\u00a0 The RMRF coalition has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onenewsnow.com\/national-security\/2013\/10\/25\/law-firms-says-its-digging-into-us-army-briefing-on-domestic-terror-threats\">applauded the Army&#8217;s stand down order<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One might think that Michael Weinstein and his Military Religious Freedom Foundation were absent in this victory for religious freedom in the US military.\u00a0 In fact, Weinstein <em>did<\/em> speak out &#8212; in <em>support<\/em> of the SPLC labeling those Christian &#8220;hate&#8221; groups and the now-withdrawn Army statements.<\/p>\n<p>While the RMRF coalition <em>defended<\/em>\u00a0military religious liberty, Weinstein&#8217;s &#8220;charity&#8221;
