{"id":2612,"date":"2009-12-15T00:30:12","date_gmt":"2009-12-15T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=2612"},"modified":"2009-12-14T22:29:24","modified_gmt":"2009-12-15T06:29:24","slug":"norad-exercise-reveals-typical-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/15\/norad-exercise-reveals-typical-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"NORAD Exercise Reveals Typical Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is common knowledge that the Air Force and White House were roundly criticized for the Air Force One flyover in New York, a faux paus that ended the political career of the leader of the White House Military Office.\u00a0 Since then, the military has made a point of announcing significant exercises and events that might attract the attention of the public, particularly those that involve aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, such announcements risk exposing the unpredictability of scheduling events that involve military aircraft.\u00a0 For example, <!--more-->the <em>Air Force Times<\/em> published an AP report that noted NORAD had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2009\/12\/ap_norad_120909\/\">postponed a widely announced exercise&#8211;again<\/a>.\u00a0 (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/\/releases\/release.aspx?releaseid=13186\">most recent announcement<\/a> indicates it will take place today.)\u00a0 While the on-again, off-again scheduling may seem like poor performance on the part of the military, its actually standard fare for military exercises&#8211;especially when aircraft are involved.<\/p>\n<p>There are a huge number of factors that influence a schedule, including weather, airspace, maintenance, aircrew, and external events, to name a few.\u00a0 Any individual thing can cause a schedule change in one area that will affect dozens of others. While most operators accept these changes as the necessary cost of accompishing the mission, to outsiders it can seem like the military can&#8217;t get its act together.\u00a0 The truth is that there are thousands of moving parts to any schedule, and they are often built like a &#8220;house of cards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, schedule changes occur simply to meet the needs (or whims) of leadership or the mission.\u00a0 As a result, while every Air Force Academy cadet memorizes the mantra that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Flexibility is the key to airpower.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>many also\u00a0learn the corollary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indecision is the key to flexibility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(What&#8217;s the key to indecision?\u00a0 Ask a fighter pilot.)<\/p>\n<p>The fluidity in a pilot&#8217;s schedule can lead to a difficulty in establishing routine, which can lead to other challenges in life.\u00a0 This was discussed both as a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/19\/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-fighter-pilot\/\">typical part of a fighter pilot&#8217;s day<\/a>, as well as a challenge to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/13\/establishing-a-spiritual-lifestyle-part-1\/\">Establishing a Spiritual Lifestyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jets &#8220;breaking&#8221;
