{"id":25720,"date":"2013-10-01T00:30:56","date_gmt":"2013-10-01T03:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=25720"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:39:39","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:39:39","slug":"pastor-80-airmen-meet-on-air-force-treatment-of-christianity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/01\/pastor-80-airmen-meet-on-air-force-treatment-of-christianity\/","title":{"rendered":"Pastor: 80 Airmen Meet on Air Force Treatment of Christianity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pastor Steve Branson of Village Parkway Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX, reported that he recently held a meeting with a large group of members of the US Air Force to hear\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2013\/09\/30\/airmen-say-air-force-is-punishing-evangelical-christians\/\">their worries over the Air Force&#8217;s treatment of their religious freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At least 80 airmen attended a private meeting at the church where [Branson] heard them voice their concerns about religious hostilities at the Air Force base. It was a standing-room only crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe religious persecution is happening,\u201d the pastor said. \u201cIt\u2019s getting bigger every day.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As to the improper conduct for which these Airmen claim they are being discriminated against [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA commander told him, \u2018Don\u2019t you understand discrimination \u2013 that <strong>your thought process is discrimination<\/strong>?\u2019\u201d Pastor Branson said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Branson&#8217;s church in San Antonio, near Lackland Air Force Base, has <!--more-->reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kens5.com\/news\/Local-pastor-claims-military-cracks-down-on-Christian-beliefs-224306131.html\">become a flash point<\/a> for allegations that the US Air Force has been restricting the religious liberty of Christians.\u00a0 The allegations mirror those by retired LtGen William &#8220;Jerry&#8221; Boykin, now vice president at the Family Research Council, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizpacreview.com\/2013\/09\/21\/ex-gen-boykin-sees-new-dont-ask-dont-tell-for-militarys-christians-83819\">who has said<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Christians have to keep quiet about their religious beliefs&#8230;you\u2019re an open Christian at your own peril&#8230;under many of the commanders in the military today and that\u2019s a major change, a major paradigm shift in our society.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At least some part of that article has to be lost in translation.\u00a0 Columnist Todd Starnes quotes one family saying their Airman had to &#8220;repeat Basic Training&#8221; because he answered a question about his faith as &#8220;Christian.&#8221;\u00a0 He may have felt he had to repeat <em>something<\/em>, but it\u00a0seems unlikely he repeated all of Basic Training because of that answer.<\/p>\n<p>Michael &#8220;Mikey&#8221; Weinstein, self-proclaimed religious freedom advocate, has leapt to the defense of Christians, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pjvoice.com\/v32\/32300words.aspx\">noting<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Clause 3, Article 6 of the Constitution, the body of the Constitution,&#8230;went into effect in December 1789. The First Amendment didn\u2019t even go into effect until March 1791. The Clause 3, Article 6 states that we will never have a religious test for any issue in the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>So Americans are going to sit back and do nothing when the United States Air Force states it will now conduct a religious test on anyone&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weinstein seems to say that taking action against Airmen <em>merely because of their beliefs<\/em> constitutes a &#8220;religious test&#8221; that violates the US Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the number of Airmen expressing concerns about their religious liberties, Weinstein <a href=\"http:\/\/communities.washingtontimes.com\/neighborhood\/conscience-realist\/2013\/may\/30\/asking-mikey-weinstein-america-really-christian-na\/\">quoted a former Supreme Court Justice<\/a>, saying<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As Sandra Day O\u2019Connor said, \u201cIn this country we do not count heads before enforcing the First Amendment\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weinstein routinely reports on the &#8220;dozens&#8221; of supporters he has that back his claims of illegal Christian conduct at military bases, so 80 is a substantial number. Even if it wasn&#8217;t, he reiterates &#8220;we do not count heads&#8221; in protecting religious liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Oops.\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 Weinstein said that when he was <em>attacking<\/em> Christians, not defending them.\u00a0 In fact, Weinstein hasn&#8217;t spoken out in defense of Christian over these incidents <em>at all<\/em>.\u00a0 The fact that logic, principle, and intellectual consistency would demand he\u00a0afford Christians the same defense he provides other religious beliefs\u00a0is no impediment to Weinstein&#8217;s zealous crusade <em>against<\/em> Christians.<\/p>\n<p>In response to allegations Christians are seeing discrimination because of their beliefs, Weinstein borrowed language from atheist Jason Torpy, calling it the death throes of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/communities.washingtontimes.com\/neighborhood\/conscience-realist\/2013\/sep\/30\/does-dont-ask-dont-tells-repeal-hurt-christians-mi\/\">Christian privilege<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, Weinstein thinks a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/02\/weinstein-says-jump-air-force-asks-how-high\/\">poster on a wall<\/a> that says &#8220;Matthew 5:9&#8221; is a religious liberty issue worthy of a personal phone call to Air Force Headquarters.\u00a0 80 Airmen expressing concerns about &#8220;religious hostility&#8221; is not.<\/p>\n<p>As Weinstein himself recently said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Let me explain which Christians we&#8217;re going after&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Religious freedom?\u00a0 Not if Mikey doesn&#8217;t like your beliefs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pastor Steve Branson of Village Parkway Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX, reported that he recently held a meeting with a large group of members of the US Air Force to hear\u00a0their worries over the Air Force&#8217;s treatment of their religious freedom.
